My husband and I currently live in Alabama and are hoping to relocate sometime in the next year and one of the places we are thinking about is Asheville. My husband is already checking out some jobs in the area. We are hoping to visit soon.

I've kind of been browsing realtor.com looking to see what types of houses are available in our price range and it seems many of them have very small lots. Are there areas outside of the city with larger lots, possibly acreage, and hopefully a bit cheaper than the city that are still within reasonable commuting distance?

if you don't mind the possibility of sort of rednecky neighbors the leicester area might be good. maybe 10-30 minutes out of town, depending where you're going and how far out you live. cheaper, plenty of land. i loved living out there.

but that's actually one of my favorite things about asheville- you can go just outside town in many directions and be in the country

yup, check leicester (pronounced Lester), swannanoa (also called swannanowhere), candler, east canton (cause in town canton is a stinky paper mill), emma, fairview. Those are all neighboring areas of Asheville (would take 15 minutes or less to get into town). If you don't mind living farther out than that, well shoot, you could go for Waynesville, Marion/Old Fort, or Marshall and still it would take only 30-45 min to get to town, and is not uncommon for folks from these towns to commute to/from Asheville each day.

That being said, I would HIGHLY suggest renting before buying a house in ANY area you are unfamiliar with. The Iwanna newspaper is released on Tuesdays, and is the #1 place to find good rentals. (ashevilleiwanna.com i think is the website, you can buy the paper online or locally in print)

Good luck!

I'm actually moving to Asheville Monday. I'll second the rental suggestion. That said, there were LOADS of rentals on craigslist. I found one with minimal problems, and we're picky. Good luck to both of you!
