I apologize if this gets answered all the time, but does anyone know what the safe distance is for a chicken coop from a well? We use well water and we're hoping to build a coop for a small flock. Do chickens carry any bacteria that are a big risk to wells?

This is a good question, to which I don't know the answer. Downhill of the well would probably be a good idea. I know that manure can contaminate wells for sure.

You might ask on the Backyard Chickens site, or alternatively call the local home extension for info.

Our coop is situated on the opposite side of our property from the well, but the hens do free range. We don't drink our water though.

Thanks for these ideas. I was thinking the free ranging might not be so much of a problem as it would be if the coop itself was too close to the well (greater concentration of poop). Our yard is pretty flat so I'm not sure we can get a downhill effect.

Calling the ext. service is a good idea.
