Long story short.

Little one - not vaxed was exposed to chicken pox on Thursday, April 2.

Mommy friend has brand new baby - and husband who has never had chicken pox.

Doesn't want me to come to the hospital alone because I might be a chicken pox carrier according to her doctor.

I don't have a problem not going to the hospital - it is her family, their health, and her new baby. I totally get and respect that. I didn't even argue the point with her.

But my question is this: Am I a chicken pox carrier now? COULD her husband or new babe get chicken pox from me?

I didn't think my son was contagious until just days before he would break out....and I didn't think I would be contagious at all - as I've already had chicken pox.

Also, am I correct to think that if your child was exposed at daycare for example or at least without you present, just a few days ago, you couldn't be a carrier, because it takes 14-21 days from exposure (you child at childcare) to coming down with the illness, and you are only contagious about 2-4 days before the first signs of illness?

We found out about this last year, when DD was a tiny underweight baby, and we got pumped milk from a friend of mine. Her daughters were exposed to chicken pox, so we waited a week or so, then we started keeping back the milk in the freezer 4 days, so when the girls came down with it, we just discarded the last four days worth of milk, and she stopped saving milk until her girls were well. (Yes, I am aware the chances of contracting chicken pox through milk are extremely slim, but we weren't willing to risk it at the time. Plus we had plenty of milk, as we used 2 donors at the time).

So in that case, your child wouldn't be contagious either, and you couldn't have caught it from him yet.

My mom was a nurse growing up and I KNOW she went to work while we HAD chicken pox. I remember staying with my grandmother. Having a child exposed to something wouldnt keep a nurse from working so how could it cause harm from a visitor
