My oldest (and only "weaner") decided when he was 4.5 years old that he would wean on his fifth birthday. He was nursing 1-4 times a day at that point. As his birthday approached he nursed less and less. A month before his birthday I told him his birthday was coming up and he said he knew and that he would wean. I reminded him of his birthday (not that he said he would wean) a week before his brirthday and he said that he changed his mind about weaning. I said that was fine and assured him that it was his choice when he would wean and that he would do it when he was ready. The night before his birthday he decided that he would indeed wean. He asked to sleep with me that night and before he nursed he asked me to tell him our story...his birth, nursing him, nursing through his little brother's pregnancy, tandem nursing, nursing through his sister's pregnancy, triandem nursing ... as he nursed, which I did. He nursed for over 20 minutes while I told our story and went blissfully to sleep as soon as we finished. It is one of my most treasured memories and was the last time he nursed.

He did ask to nurse (out of habit) for several months after weaning, but would right after asking would laugh and say, "Oh, I forgot!" or I would ask him if he was still a "weaner" (our little joke) and he would laugh and say yes. He tried to nurse a couple times a few weeks/months after weaning but was laughing too hard to actually latch on. He still, at age 6, loves to cuddle with me with a hand on each side of my breast.

I continue to nurse my almost-5 year old and almost-3 year old and am 21 weeks pregnant. I'm wondering when/how my older nurslings will wean...but not rushing them by any means!!!
