So I'm filling out the registration form for my childbirth class, and the last question reads:

"Please tell me three things which are extremely important for you to learn in this course."

I'm stuck. I don't want to steal anyone's answers but what would you guys put? I'm thinking, really, that I want to learn more about how to manange the pain of labor, I want to learn how to deal with my fears, I want to learn about what to expect when labor starts. But are those things too abstract?

What would you put if it were your first labor, first child, first childbirth class?

TIA!

I want my husband to learn how to support me and advocate for me.

I want to learn how to have a peaceful experience. ie. decrease pain, fear, anxiety; increase awareness; decrease the need for medical intervention

I think your needs from this class are great. They're not abstract at all. What type of class is this? I found that reading a Bradley book helped me to know what it is exactly that I'm wanting from my birth other than to say "natural".

Carrie I think those "wants" are great! It's hard to know exactly what you want to know when you don't know it yet, so you've got to be a bit vague!

Since I teach CBE... I'm trying to find a class for the social aspect of it b/c I don't know anyone due around my time here irl and it'd be nice to have some Mommas to share the experience of new babes with.

Thanks, guys!

The class doesn't really have an affinity with any type of method, it's more of a general class, I suppose. Focused on natural childbirth, of course, and it is offered by a woman who also works as a doula. She is recommended highly by both of my midwives. I'm hoping it's a good, broad class.

I'm also thinking of buying the hypnobirthing book and cd in conjunction, basically b/c this class is so general and I've heard such good things about hypnobirthing.

I think your "wants" are right on track.

Since this is my second time around my needs focus more on getting DH prepared, but if it were my first time I'd want the same things for myself...

Preparedness for DH on his fears about the birth - well, not necessarily fears, more like dealing with seeing me go through it and not panic.

Preparedness on what to expect throughout the labor process - not the hospital version where they explain when to come in and when you can get an epidural, but the real stuff that will help for home. Like my need to do some serious eliminating of my bowels as I was going into transition last time.

Techniques DH can use to help ease the labor pains throughout, and good visualization techniques for me to use during contractions. Knowledge and maybe even videos to help DH understand that labor doesn't have to be the agonizing screaming catastrophe he's been shown it is through his paramedic training.

how to be able to stay relaxed through potential pain and stress

techniques to help me stay focused

how to build confidence in my husband and I so we know what to expect
