Was written originally in 1939 by an obstetrician who witnessed a woman's birth that was NOT PAINFUL AT ALL, after seeing a zillion births that were painful and medicated. He decided to study why some women experience so much pain in childbirth, versus other women who do not experience much at all -- or any.

It's a little dense, and as it was written in 1939 (and the 2004 version is unabridged; there are other versions that are abridged) some of the phrases are really outdated and strange. However, I find it fascinating and empowering. And if I can have a pain-free birth, all the better!

I place that book on the altar of childbirth in my house and pray to the labor gods nightly, oh please, oh please...

Sounds familiar... is it referenced in Ina May's Guide? I'm going to check it out though, particularly after last time.

Could be referenced in Ina May, I'm not sure -- I'm guilty of only skimming her books, they're a little groooooooooovy for me.

He's known as the founder of natural childbirth, so I think he's referenced in Bradley or AAHCC or whatever it is now.

Yes, it's referenced there. I just finished reading Ina Mae's guide and she definitely mentions it.

I am all for a pain-free unmedicated birth. It goes right along with my 38 week going into labor, push the baby out in 3-5 hours scenario. I even want Dh to snap a picture with my thumbs up and a smile on my face while she's crowning.

Lurking. Sorry.

That is my ALL TIME favorite labor education book. I've had four very managable labors (soon to be five!) due to what I learned from that book 18 years ago!
