DS can open the oven now and I am SO nervous about using it!! I have been thinking of getting one of those oven locks but it looks like they will leave that nasty sticky adhesive residue when it is removed. Has anyone tried to remove the lock?? Is it really hard?? We are only in this house for a few years so I don't want to have to buy a new oven when we leave!!

I was never able to get the oven latch to even work on my old oven, unfortunately. For some reason, the way the directions said to put it in, the oven wouldn't close. I think the handle was in a weird place or something; it was a veeery old model. Thank goodness now we have a nifty new electronic oven that has a built-in lock. Of course I guess buying a new oven isn't really an option...

I don't know if you are talking about the same thing i am, but my IL's have one on thier oven to keep the kids out, and its SO easy to unlatch that my son could probably do it if he really wanted to anyways...

I don't have my home child proofed, i just let him experiance things on his own and when i feel that he is going to get hurt i let him know its BAD to touch whatever it is he is touching

Id imagine however that the latch would leave sticky residue, but you should be able to find a product that will help you remove it.

Oh yeah, I didn't even bother answering your actual question

If you do get sticky residue (which the coffee table corners [totally worthless, btw] did leave on our furniture so I'm sure most of the childproof things do), you can use white vinegar to scrub it off. Also works well for sticky left behind by price tags on things, especially the glass part of photo frames.

We got an oven latch (by Safety 1st - holds the door closed until it's slid over and lifted up) a few weeks ago after Bekah put a Beanie Baby, a plastic toy and a plastic food container in the oven. We had no idea these things were in there and DH turned it on to preheat....those items do not smell nice when cooked.

We always check the oven before turning it on, to make sure nothing is inside. And unless we're in the kitchen too, toddlers aren't allowed in there when the oven is on. It's not a big safety issue, IMO, unless a particular kid becomes obsessed with opening the oven. My 6-year-old never even tried, maybe because we always had him back off when we checked on food cooking in there and he felt the heat....

ha i know what you mean :| my son put his toothbrush into our microwave and turned the dial to full ( 60 mins ) and I didn't hear it because it was a fairly quiet microwave and the tv blarred it out.
The tooth brush ended up melting and the microwave blew up.. it took forever to get the smoke and the smell out of my apt
