I just watched this tonight (and yes I know there's another thread around here somewhere about it but heck if I can find it, that search feature is useless <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/duh.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="duh"> )...<br><br><br><br><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/jaw.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="dropjaw"><br><br><br>
I cried soo much. And, my breasts are *killing* me. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/dizzy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Dizzy">: I fully understand that she had no experience with pregnant womyn or mothering or feeding babies but dang. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/yikes.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="EEK!"> You'd think intuition would kick in after a bit. It was killing me to see that poor baby crying and her so clueless.<br><br>
And --- how did they DO that?! Was it a real baby? Was she REALLY pregnant and had the baby on camera??! It was so freaking realistic! OMG!!! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/yikes.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="EEK!"><br><br><br>

Have you read the book? I've read the book but not seen the movie. I'm afraid of being disappointed in case, as I suspect, they give it the <i>Handmaid's Tale</i> treatment and completely obliterate the reproductive politics theme for the movie version.

We JUST watched this movie and I was surprised to see this thread on the front page!<br><br>
My dh is an animator and said the baby was animated for sure.<br><br>
It was an intense movie.

Yep, definitely animated baby.<br><br>
The book is almost a completely different story. The infertility is the same but lots of characters are switched around and the plot is different. But it's a good book.

I just watched it last night too. Most freaking depressing movie I've seen in years. Everything was so grim. At one point I even said to my dad "If they don't make it to the damn boat I'm gonna find the director and smack him."<br><br>
I read the book over a year ago. I kept thinking the movie was different from the book, but I'm not sure how (just a lot of things didn't seem *familiar* at all) because I can't remember enough about the book.<br><br>
IIRC, one of the DVD's special features is a bit about how they did the birth scene.

I thought it was very depressing too and I was very disappointed. I just don't like movies like that. Even my daughter, who rented it, and usually likes that kind of movie, thought it was a waste of money. I didn't watch the extra scenes though - might have been interesting.

From what I've read of the movie it's not even remotely the same. I'm not going to bother with the movie, I know it would piss me off that all they did was keep the title, a few other characters names (who the heck is this Key woman they made up - Julian is the one who is pregnant, and she and Theo have no past!), and the infertility part. The rest is all different.
