Hi!

I'm especially speaking to the Jewish mothers who MUST preform this ritual at 8 days. Don't make the same mistake as I did; inform yourself!

I had a horrible experience with my son's circumcision. Immediately after my son's brit, he started a whole-body clonic jerking. I immediately rushed him to the Pediatrician. This constant jerking was so dramatic that unknowingly to me, my son's Sandek (my OB/Gyn) also called my pediatrician as soon as he left my home. 3 of the staff attendings at my busy NYC Peds office simultaneously assessed his neurological function, which they said was intact. The brightest of the group hypothesized that it may be a internalized response to trauma. This unnerving jerking lasted about 36 hours. Additionally, he went into a state of very deep sleep, and was difficult to arouse. Then I found an article published in the peer-reviewed article PAIN (2004) 107(3):242-55. Below is the abstract.

Comprehensive description of newborn distress behavior in response to acute pain (newborn male circumcision).

One of the most difficult challenges still facing researchers and clinicians is assessing pain in the newborn. Behaviors provide one of the most promising avenues for deepening our fundamental understanding of complex phenomenon like newborn pain, and are key to developing descriptive-level knowledge to further newborn pain assessment efforts. In this ethologically based research, we report on the duration and frequency of neonatal distress behavior to seven distinct noxious and non-noxious but distress-provoking events including baseline (diaper change, post-diaper change, application of arm and leg restraints, post-application of arm and leg restraints, circumcision, post-circumcision) associated with newborn surgical pain. Approximately 67 min of videotaped data, involving four neonates who had undergone newborn male circumcision, were coded at 1-s intervals (4010 s in total). A reliably established coding scheme was used to code behaviors as they were observed on videotape for the duration of the seven designated events. This led to the identification of (1) 40 distress behaviors as they occurred along the continuum of distress, (2) eight distress behaviors specific to surgery, (3) 11 classes of behaviors occurring within the five sub-phases of circumcision, and (4) a description of 25 distinct post-distress behaviors. Findings support the ability to distinguish distress behaviors specific to pain and the ability to detect prolonged distress as well as individual differences in distress-related pain expression. Findings also justify ongoing use of ethological approaches to further newborn pain assessment and to investigate poorly understood topics such as infant self-regulation within the context of pain (pain recovery).

I wasn't an informed mother (and I have an Ivy PhD in Biochemistry). I was'nt myself because of a compressed L4 vertebrate during childbirth. At the same time, my baby had been in the NICU for 6 days for a slight temperature. I was literally using a walker to get to the NICU, where I was spending all night to be with my baby. Because of all this, I allowed my husband to make all the arrangements with the mohel. Thus, my baby had NO anesthesia, and NO post-pain relief (even after we saw the pediatricians). Mothers who must circumcise, make these decisions/plans BEFORE your delevery, so your baby will be treated in a more humanitarian way than I allowed mine to be treated.

Thanks for your story- I'm sorry to hear about all of the pain & trauma you have gone through.

Just wanted to point out that no mother, even us Jews, MUST have their son circumcised. It's a choice, thankfully Jews all over the world are finally realizing that.

But to any mother, of any religion, your story provides an excellent warning.

Take care!

Hugs to you, mama, and your baby.

Funny how you always hear of babies who 'sleep through it' or 'didn't even notice'...bah.
