I just wanted to share my excitement that our state legislators have voted to protect civil rights in MA and not put gay marriage on the ballot. I personally found the notion of voting on whether or not to grant equal rights to my fellow citizens disturbing and frightening. Here's to the wisdom of our elected officials choosing to take a stand and protect our standing as the first state in the nation to allow people to marry who they want!

I let out a huge yell when I got the newsflash in my inbox - DD wanted to know what all the excitement was about. She'd seen all the signholders at the State House when we went in for Breastfeeding Lobby Day, and our church has been very active in getting folks to send psotcards, etc., so we'd already had many talks about it. When I told her that our legislators did the right thing, she cheered, too.

One thing I'm thrilled about is that my senator, Morrissey, changed his vote. People wrote and called and he listened. Woo hoo!

I was one of the few people that made it into the courtroom when the oral arugments took place in 2003 for this case. As such, I'm always following what's going on and I was so relieved that they did the right thing!

I've written before on this board about growing up with lesbian moms and the hardships we faced from society and it simply enrages me whenever peope talk about voting on the rights of my family!!!
I mean who are these people???

How did MA get all the intelligent, rational legislators (enough of them, anyway
)?

Hurray. I was a little worried about that one. I had started thinking "what state am I living in again?"

I really cannot even think about the whole issue without getting intensly upset and yelling tirades at my poor husband (he totally agrees with me but he is the only one around poor guy).

It might help to know that a lot of the pro-amendment propaganda was coming from out-of-state advocacy groups. After all, over 77% of our legislators threw the amendment out

He is my senator too and it made me feel sooo good to have called and asked him to change his vote! I need to call and thank him next week.

See, those calls *do* make a difference!
Definitely call and thank him - the aide I spoke to was very happy to be getting a thank you call.

I'm on the mailing list for Quincy for Marriage Equality, and just got an alert asking folks to write letters to the editor and so on supporting this recent vote. Sen. Morrissey, who changed his vote, was booed at recent parades and is catching a lot of flack. I'm horrified. This battle isn't over. I'm writing another thank you note to Sen. Morrissey right now.
