cloth diapers cause diaper rash?

794 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  CalebsMama05
my MIL (who by the way i actually love) says that her experience with CDs was that her children got rashes. I want to use CDs because i heard that they reduce the chances of a rash.

anyway, keep in mind that her yongest child, my dh, is 23 years old.

have things changed, or is she right?

TIA

If you wash the diapers with too much detergent, the residue can cause rash. Same goes for using fabric softener or dryer sheets. Improper washing can cause your diapers to not absorb properly, smell bad or give baby a rash.

Cloth really is awesome! I hope you persevere and show MIL that cloth has come a long way!

I had to edit b/c I forgot to say that you are right- properly washed and frequently changed cloth diapers reduce rashes. They're breatheable, not with a layer of plastic like a disposable dipe! You do generally have to change cloth a *bit* more frequently than sposies since they are not going to absorb as much liquid. Google "Sodium polyacrylate" and you'll see that what make sposies so absorbent really is not very good for you and can cause rash!
i will keep that all in mind.

I informed her that a lot had changed and that id drop by once they have come in. *ive already ordered them

I will so look into that info about that cause you've already got me scared. thank you so much for your replay i feel much better knowing i have ppl who understand and support my openion.

Yvonne,
I did not want to scare you away from using disposables EVER. They do come in handy sometimes...I said that b/c I thought the more information you have, the easier it will be to explain your reason for wanting to use cloth. There are many reasons...
: my MIL says the same thing. she also says that in the end it will cost the same as sposies. cuz she knows one of the thing i love aqbout CDer is that they cost less.

they *may* cost the same as disposables if you buy the most expensive ones and keep buying...but for ME its definately worth it in convenience! out of dipes? run a load of laundry! my flats will dry in 10mins in the dryer if needed.
