Hi,

I am pregnant with my first and would like to cloth diaper my baby when he or she arrives. I'm in Toronto, and I am so overwhelmed by all the options out there. I haven't started looking into diaper services yet, but would consider this if it wasn't too expensive. I am aware of the site www.borntolove.com, but is there a store anywhere that allows you to play around with different styles to see what might work?? I just don't know where to start!

TIA,
Jenbird

Hi Jenbird

You could try With Child at Pape/Danforth or Diaper-eez on Bloor W between Jane & Roncesvalles. There may be other stores but these are the two I know best. The staff is generally very helpful.
Neither store will have the huge selection of some of the online stores like Born to Love. But still you'll get a chance to look some things over.

Congratulations!

Hi & congrats on your first baby-to-be!

My personal recommendation is Diaper-eez. I have shopped at both With Child and Diaper-eez, and definitely prefer the latter ~ not only for their stock, but also their customer service. It is the tops!

Susan (co-owner of Diaper-eez with her mother) spent two hours with my husband and I before our daughter was born. We knew next to nothing about CD'ing, and came out with all the information we had hoped to gain... plus much more! Not only did we learn enough about all the different CD'ing choices to make our decision, but we also learned ways of folding the CPF diapers. Best, we never once felt like we were taking up too much of her time.

Also, I wanted to share that through Diaper-eez you can make your purchases via the telephone and have them delivered for a nominal fee (perhaps this is also the case with With Child). This came in VERY handy for us as our daughter was born 16 days early & I hadn't yet bought a nursing pillow! We called Susan, and 2 hours later it was she brought it to our door

ok, I've rambled on enough.... good luck with your search!

I recommend Comfy Cotton, they deliver cloth diapers to your house once a week, you return the soiled diapers to them & they clean them. They're cheaper than buying Papmers or whatever, and cost about $200 every 13 weeks.

Try subscribing to the Born to Love cloth diapering yahoo group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BTLdiapering . It's a very active list and will give you all kinds of thoughts and suggestions about diapers. You seem to know that Catherine of Born to Love is Canadian, but alot of the list members are actually Americans.

I personally went with Fuzzibunz, even though they're one of the most expensive options out there (if you go this route, I recommend shopping around and buying from a WAHM in the USA, asking them to label the package so that you don't get hit with customs -- I particularly recommend www.lilbunz.com ). Buying them in the States is actually cheaper than buying them in Canada, in my experience.

Anyway, IMHO, they're totally the best cloth diapering system and keep all wetness away from the baby, plus you don't have to worry about a cover as they're kinda-sorta all-in-ones (you stuff them with an insert when you take them from the laundry, then bingo-bango on to baby in one step). Expensive for cloth, but wayyy cheaper than disposable.

Anyway, alot of the WAHMs online stores will sell you a "tester" package -- several different brands of diapers at a really reduced cost. But it's a little tricky cause you may not want to commit to any one brand until you see the shape of your baby (skinny thighs, long body, etc), and yet you don't want to leave ordering diapers til after the birth both because you'll need to use 'em the second the babe's born, and also cause you won't have any time in the first few weeks to actually shop!

I went with a diaper service for the first 4 weeks. They really are CHEAP (at least here in Vancouver). But you do have to buy 4 or 5 diaper covers to go with the service diapers (there I'd recommend Bumpy's [not Bummi's].) That way you don't get your own diapers messed up with meconium, too, yikes!

Hi,

We searched around ... did tons of research ... and kinda came full circle ... we used comfy cotton as our diaper service and it is fantastic! i can't say enough about them!

www.comfycotton.ca

The deliver dipes every week ... you just place dirty diapers in a bag (no rinsing) put on porch for pick up ... it is that easy. You can also order it in twelve week installments and get one week free.

In terms of diaper covers I find bummi's the best, and you can order them for a really great price from comfy cotton (5-6 dollars cheaper than at diaper-eez.

I think the type of cover really depends on the baby, we have used kooshie, motherease, imsy vimsy wool cover ( good but expensive, and not as easy to maintain), angel wraps( didn't like these much), nikki, and really found bummi's the best. we use the regular and the super whisper one.

Fuzzibunz looked great but again, we had chosen the diaper service, so we didn't need the all in one ... i have always wanted to try fleece covers, but haven't yet.

The bummis kept baby dry even through the night, and I have never had any experience with bowel movements that leak excessively.

Highly, highly , recommend them.
