Hi!

Please point me in the direction to information?
I need CDs that are as natural as possible and will fit and 'grow' with my larger than average baby (height-wise). I have not held a cloth diaper in my hand although I have seen them at the natural mothering group I just joined.

We do everything natural that we can but then I put this stinky perfumed diaper on my daughter (with eczema) and I hate them. They make ME sick.

We have very little money and my MIL is buying her diapers right now. We started with disposables b/c we didn't have access to a washer/dryer. Now we do (cuz we had to move in with my parents... anti-natural... not easy).

My daughter about 27" and 16lbs and 5 months old. I've been told Ebay is a good place to get used diapers at a good price?

Btw, what the heck does hyena mean?
:

Thanks,
Jen

LOL I just found out about hyena too, and I'm still confused. What I've heard is that they're WAHM's who lurk at popular diaper selling sites to nab the diaps as soon as they're available. *shrug*

I myself like fuzzi bunz. Wonderoos and can grow with a child, although my baby is 12 months old and 25 lbs and I don't like the fit of them on her. Maybe on a smaller baby though. I feel your pain, my baby is larger than average as well
Prefolds can kind of grow with your baby to a point...you fold them to adjust the rise. Wool covers are a good natural option, a good site for them is chickadee knits. I know there are also organic cloth out there which I haven't tried yet, I'm pretty new to this myself, almost a month for me! So far I've tried Fuzzi Bunz, Happy Heiny, Bumkins, prefolds, and the wonderoos. They all work great... excpet like I said the wonderoos fit kind of small on my Abby.

Once you get started, you'll find it's VERY addicting. I started out with 2 fuzzi bunz 'just to try' and was hooked from day 1.

Hi! Welcome to CDing!! It can be so fun! THere are a lot of sites that offer "trial" packages. You can surf around and try some that way. Inexpensive dipes would be prefolds and covers (wool covers are expensive, but they breath and you only need a few). I like fitteds and wool, but some fitteds (heyena especially) are pretty price. (heyena btw are well-made, hard to get, and usually pricey!).

I've had good luck with ebay, but I like the TP here or other for sale or trade boards on other sites like diaper pin. It's great to try before you make a big investment.

HTH. Have fun!!

I am so glad that you want to do cloth. It is great!

When you say natural as possible.....are you ok with using cloth dipes that have plastics? Would you prefer to stay with more natural fibers such as wool? Also are you looking for organic dipes? Are used ok?

Whew.......answer those then I will give ya some advice!

I was going to ask the same question as Angela...do you want organics...or are you ok with fleece and PUL? Do you want something as easy as a disposable to put on or would you not mind multiple steps?

If you want a good one-size diaper, I really like Cuddlebuns (bikini-cut) they are very trim and have fit since I first tried them on my baby (at 2 weeks old) and they still fit him at 6 months and my toddler who is 28 months! Another diaper I really like are Fuzzi Bunz (pocket diaper).

Also Hyena are diapers that are rarely instock...they go really quickly and many people want them. The WAHM that make hyena diapers will stock, usually, at a specific time and then everyone who wants them goes to their site to see what they can get, etc.

If you want your diapers to be as natural as possible, then you'll probably want to stay away from pocket diapers such as Fuzzi Bunz and Wonderoos. Pocket diapers are made entirely of synthetic materials -- polyurethane laminate on the outside and polyester fleece (or some other synthetic) on the inside. A natural system would be organic cotton diapers and organic wool covers. There is a sourcelist here. In my opinion, the MOST natural system would be an organic cotton tie-on diaper (http://store.sckoon.com/n67a001.html or http://www.ecobaby.com/catalog/produ...pf_id=PCDPRTIE) with an organic wool soaker. The second most natural system would be either an organic cotton fitted diaper with metal snaps and an organic wool soaker, or an organic cotton prefold/flat/contour/prefitted and an organic wool wrap with metal snaps.

Organic cotton fitteds with metal snaps:
http://www.kneesnbottoms.com/store/WsDefault.asp?One=55
http://www.itisseworganic.com/store/results2.asp?Sub=20 (these also have organic cotton elastic and organic cotton thread. they are the most natural/organic fitteds I've seen)
http://www.kidletsclothing.com/produ...egory=1&page=2
http://www.snoogiesnaps.com/SnoogieSnaps.htm (you have to specially request metal snaps)

The Sckoon tie-on diaper and the B's Knees N Bottoms diaper are both one-size-fits-all diapers. Snoogie Snaps offers both one-size-fits-all diapers and multi size diapers.

Other organic cotton one-size-fits-all diapers:

Thanks for the info and links! I'm ready to dive in and start learning what is out there!

Yes, I'm looking for natural fibers... I'd prefer no synthetic materials. Organic cotton isn't totally necessary but non-synthetic at least is what I'm looking for.

After I start looking I'm sure I'll have more questions and I will post them here and I hope I can get more help!

1) Do all cloth diapers use doublers?

2) Do some people use totally different diapers for day and night?

3) Why does the name "wool SOAKER" have me worried? :LOL j/k

4) I've read on a site something about absorbency having to do with washings... One organic cotton diaper it seems to say that I have to wash it five times to get it to be absorbent? Am I understanding this correctly?

5)What are the differences between cottons, hemp fleece, knit terry and sherpa? What is sherpa? I thought it was a guide who helped you climb a mountain.

6) How many diapers, doublers and wool covers do I need per day? How many days worth do people usually buy or do they just wash the diapers every day?

Thanks,
Jen

All diapers have soaker pads, which can be easy to confuse with doublers. Usually, you only need to add a doubler for overnight or for long naps or for car trips, or if your baby is a heavy wetter.

Some people do use special, highly absorbent nighttime diapers.

Theoretically, you're supposed to wash diapers several times before you use them, in order to get the natural oils out, or they won't be absorbent enough. However, I have not found this to be true for my children. My children aren't heavy wetters, though.

Knit terry cotton is smooth on one side and loopy on the other side and very absorbent. Sherpa is also a knit, and it is really soft and it is very fluffy and plush on one side, so it's a bit thick, and it is also absorbent.

I'd say a minimum number of diapers to have on hand is 2 dozen, even if you're going to wash every day. I'd say 3 dozen would be better if you don't want to wash every day. You should have 4-6 wool covers.
