Hello mamas! My hubby and I are moving our family down to GA the end of next month (from here in NH)
We are moving to Cobb county... Not exactly sure where yet, but the kennesaw marietta area...

I need help with 2 things... First, anyone from the area have a GREAT family doctor that doesnt pressure about vax? I LOVE my doctor here, she is anti vax, so she is WONDERFUL, and I would love to find another DR like her...

Second... anyone have tips on filling out the "cobb county religious exemption form" for school? The one up here you just fill in the names adn get it notarized... the Cobb county one you have to write stuff?? what do people write in there??? lol

TIA!!
Also if there are any mamas that will be looking for a new friend, Id love to make some! hehehehee

Glad to hear another like-minded mama will be moving to the area. I actually live right in Marietta. If you are within the city limits of Marietta you have to submit to Marietta City Schools, otherwise it will be Cobb County Schools as for your "homelearning" requirements. My oldest is only in his first documented year, so the requirements have only been to submit the Letter of Intent to utilize a home study program, and to submit monthly attendance reports. In his "third grade" year, and every three years after that, he will have to be tested. But I'm not there yet, so I can't really speak from experience on that issue.

As for peds...well, we go to Dr. Mark Long of Kennesaw Pediatrics. I actually like Dr. Thrower, who is there too...Dr. Bruggner...not so much. They are definitely not anti-vax, but are tolerant of our decision to not vax our children. I just sign off, and no other issues there. I think they have a very good office, are great on diagnosing true medical issues...so that's why I go. I don't really get into my parenting choices so much i.e. extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping, etc...b/c I think that's a parenting issue, not a medical issue. But they are supportive nonetheless. They also have LC on staff now, I hear, but I never met her, as she came much after my children were infants. I also don't do every well check. i do go to some, just to make sure my kiddos are comfortable when or if they do have issues, and although they do make a point of telling me that I should come in for a well check...it hasn't been an issue.

I have also heard really good things about Dr. Kute, and another ..maybe Dr. Abrams??? something to that effect...but I really can't justify the travel for me...Kennesaw Pediatrics is a good choice.

I love love love Dr. Wood of Wood Family Chiropractic, also in Marietta...if you are looking for a Chiropractor. I can suggest Dr. Monica O' Sullivan, a naturopath, however, she is not in Marietta.

Anyway, let me know if you have any other questions...I'd love to help. Are you buying a house? Do you know your exact location? I am not a practicing realtor in GA, but I have my license and have several contacts. There are actually some pretty good deals on homes in my neighborhood right now, but I don't know exactly what your looking for.

Anyways, welcome...and I hope we can meet. Our kids are close in ages too! Cool!

I just wanted to mention that Dr. Kute is pro-vax and follows the CDC's schedule to the letter. We loved her other than that.

Hey, thanks for the reply.
We actually arent going to home school... its a religious vaccine exemption for the cobb school district...????

Thanks for the Doc suggestions.... I definitely dont want a doc that follows the schedule cause they will hound me about vaxing, and I HATE that.
I also dont want a ped... I like family doctors that we all go to the same doc, Plus my youngest is 19 months so there really isnt need for a ped. (that rhymes hehehe)
I am going to be switching to the local HMN chapter down there, so maybe some members in there will have suggestions for me on a doc as well... Thanks so much!!!

Anyone else have ideas on a family doc, or know about filling out that exemption form???

I know of two good Peds in Cobb.

First, Dr. Heaven at Woodstock Pediatrics. We see her and have for about 8 years. We vax selectively and delayed and she's always been supportive of that. I know non-vaxers who see her, too. She's very pro-breastfeeding and co-sleeping and various other crunchy things. She didn't even blink when I told her I planned a homebirth with my youngest! It's clearly not her thing, but she supported my choice.

Also, I have two good friends who see Dr. Ani at Pediatric Associates in Marietta. I've heard very good things about her and I know one of my friends doesn't vax.

OMG YAY! Thank you so much! I will be looking into those for SURE!
I was kind of nervous cause the local HMN leader gave me only a couple people to choose from... one makes you sign that dreaded paper that I WILL NOT sign... and the other 2 were too far away... so I was terrified that I was going to have issues!!! Thanks a million!

eta.... those are both peds I guess... maybe Ill just have to have a different doc for me. I wont have to be as picky about my doc I suppose lol!

Hi Noelle,
I can second the recommendation for Dr. Ani--we go to her and I love her laid-back, mellow vibe.

Regarding the school form, I filled one of those out last year for my DD's kindergarten registration and I think I just wrote a quick one-line sentence on there, like "We choose not to do any vaccinations for personal family reasons." That's it. And the lady who processed the school registration didn't even bat an eye about it.

Good luck with your move!

Hey I teach for Cobb County... I would just handwrite or type and sign a statement affirming that you are exempting for religious beliefs. I don't think they are looking for a giant explanation.

If you have any questions about the schools, I'll be happy to answer to the best of my ability! Welcome!

When we lived in Cobb County we had to submit a notarized exemption form for no vax. I think you can hand write one but unless things have changed in the last year it still has to be notarized. Also there a couple of good charter schools (public funded so free, but run like private) in the area. One in Kennesaw, one in Marietta and I think one in Smyrna. My children went to the one in Kennesaw and the one on in Marietta and we really liked them. They also originally went to their districted school and we were not happy with them.

Yes it does need to be notarized... I ended up opening the page into word, and just typing a little blurb into it and printing it out... Ill get it notarized when i get down there...

And yes they are actually attending a charter school, though its the one they are supposed to attend based on where we live I guess. Its supposed to be a great school, so Im happy.

Hi Noelle,

I haven't logged in here for ages, but we recently moved to Cobb County and I will need a ped so thanks for starting the thread! My daughter will be starting kindergarten at Addison next month and I have heard good things about the school. Good luck with the move!

I didnt' see this post until today. We live in Kennesaw/Marietta and see Dr. Williams at NW Family Practice. He's an MD, but supports us following a delayed schedule (starting after age 5) to ensure "a developmentally normal child". We don't plan to vax, but he hasn't given me any drama so far. Nice guy, really.

It seems that most of the family practice docs I have called do not see Peds. At least that has been my experience here. I was sad because we had an amazing Family Practice doc before we moved here.
