I've never heard of giving coconut water or milk to babies!

I might be corrected, but coconut milk is very high in fat, and possibly colesterol. Coconut water (I believe) if given too much can also give people diarrhea.

I'm from SE Asia originally, and coconut milk/water is used ALOT there, so my info is from the general knowledge and common practices.

Is there a reason why you'd consider giving coconut milk/water?

I haven't heard anything like that (special health benefits, giving vigin coconut oil, etc) but I do know you can use coconut water to rehydrate a child if they are getting dehydrated due to illness or activity. While I'd go with breastmilk for a younger child, in an older child coconut water would certainly be more appropriate than something like pedialyte or gatoraide!

My closest real world friend is Indian and her MIL is constantly offering my friend's dd coconut water! It may be a regional thing though...

I checked quickly and it contains Lauric acid, one of the components of breastmilk. If you're breastfeeding I don't think it's necessary. The only reference I could find for giving it to babies was to help wean them from the breast.

If you eat the fresh green ones, it has this slurpy flesh in side when i lived in central america, this is one of the first foods I gave my son, mixed with mashed potatos.

Coconuts have lots of mineral nutrients (i think) it just seemed natural to give it to him, i eat tones of them and don't get diarrea?

I also read in a Baby Vegetarian book someone gave me when i returned to Canada, that in the south pacific a group of indiginous prepare baby food that way...

Wow, that's interesting! I'm also from South East Asia, and I know a lot of ppl give their kids coconut water. I remember when I was a kid I drink it a lot, and didn't get diarrhea. I thought it was supposed to be the thing to give to the kids when they have it. hmmmm.....
