My baby's Turkish daddy used to irritate me. He would always feel my baby's hands and if they were cold, he'd say she was cold and needed warmer clothes, and if her hands were warm, he'd say she was losing heat from her hands and was cold and needed warmer clothes. I worried about overbundling her, but at 19 months, she will pull clothes off or say if she's hot.<br><br>
He wears socks to bed and I don't like wearing socks in bed unless it is extremely cold or I'm moisturizing my feet and I still don't like it. The other night it was about 70 or so and as occasionallly happens, I inexplicably felt chilled and couldn't get warm. I added blankets and finally turned the heat up till it was about 75, but I still didn't feel warm and my feet were as cold as ice when I touched them. I think next time I have that experience, I'll put some warm socks on immediately and see if I can avoid having to turn the heat on. I don't think I had a fever or anything like that. But I wondered if that is what he's always afraid the baby is experiencing if her hands are cold. I was thinking there may be something to that after all, but I'm not sure. Sometimes she's dressed plenty warmly, but if there is a cool breeze, anything exposed will feel cool, too. He's really worried she'll get sick, but she's always been wonderfully healthy and has only had one ear infection, a little eczema, and a few mild colds by 19 months.<br><br>
He also likes her wearing a onesie because he's afraid if a regular tee shirt rides up, her kidneys will get cold and they'll be damaged. And this is when it's warm enough to only need one layer.<br><br>
Is this a Turkish thing?<br><br>

It's a European thing.

Personally--and not Turkish--I check for too hot by feeling the back of the neck, and for too cold by feeling the hands (we rarely have bare feet). When hands are cold, I find adding another layer (usually a blanket, hat, or 2nd shirt, but definitely socks) usually warms them up, and then baby is happy.

Or a generational thing. My aunt is in her 60's, has lived in northern Alberta all her live and will chide anyone that lets their child run around without socks. Same thing with the cold hands/feet, and kidneys. My mom is a couple years younger than her but doesn't react the same way. She's seen us kids in action <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"> we just didn't get as cold as other kids and all my nieces,nephews and children are the same way.<br>
My aunt isn't the first person around that age to react like that either.

I don't think it has anything to do with being Turkish. To many people do that of all colors and ethnicity.

We took DS to Turkey when he was three months old, and strangers were always coming up to me and telling me he was cold. It was 80+ degrees and I was wearing him. We were both sweating! I don't think it's just a Turkish thing, as many cultures do this, but I don't think there's much to it, personally.

My husband is Turkish and we have a 3 year old. Our daughter was born in Turkey and this was a huge issue. His parents (especially mother) was telling us, our was cold even when she bundled up. Luckily, my husband stuck to my side and told his parents our daughter did not need to be bundled up.

It'ss not Turkish thing only, my mom's the same way and she's Georgian.

Yeah, it's definitely not just a Turkish thing. My dh is Italian and he and his family have similar ideas about keeping children bundled.<br><br><div style="margin:20px;margin-top:5px;">

I have a friend who freaks out whenever my dd's shirt rides up (or when she lifts it to show everyone her stomach, which she LOVES to do <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngbiggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="orange big grin">) because she says that dd's abdomen will "catch cold." I have no idea what that entails but from my friend's insistence, and her alarm whenever dd's abdomen is in view, I'm guessing it's pretty serious!

LOL--my daughter has just started showing her belly! My baby's father would have been appalled to have seen my older 2 running around in just a diaper-which was their "summer uniform" at home! i DID put a shirt on them when we went out or when company came.
