Hi there,

Is there any way to rescue or repair a scratched CD? We have several books/stories on CD that are unusable because they are scratched.

Obviously, I should have downloaded them onto the computer or iPod - then I could re-burn one as needed, but considering the fact that I didn't . . . any advice?

Thanks so much!

Polishing middle to outside with peanut butter can help smooth out scratches a little bit I have heard, which is funny because I found DVDs my son had gotten into smeared with PB and scratched due to his sticky hands. Sometimes a good CD reader can overlook the scratches and copy it anyway given some extra time.

CDs and DVDs can be refinished. Usually the scratch is only in the protective coating, and doesn't damage the tracks themselves. There is a tool that does this, but it has mixed reviews. You can also call around to video game stores that sell used games - they will often repair CDs for a small fee. Around here it's $5 for the repair.

I have used Pledge (sp) furniture polish before.. on a completly unreadable skipping cd a long time ago and it worked for a while..enough that you could burn it at this point. I use rubbing alcohol wipes now and it gets off all the dirt, grime and plays again but it doesn't fix the skipping on dvds.
