I am new to cloth diapering and have a 16 month old DS in daycare. I finally convinced them to allow us to use them while he's there but they were hesitant and, admittedly not thrilled with the idea. So I am trying to find a system that is as user friendly as possible.

I currently use bumgenius 3.0 with him at home and figured they would be best for his daycare providers since they are AIO's.

However, they seem a little, well, plastic-y to me and I'm intrigued by the hemp/bamboo alternatives out there. I realize I will need a cover for these, and hence, my questions about longies.

I hope this is not too obvious of a question, but if I put him in a bamboo dipe, for example, and put a wool longie on top, will i need to put anything over that? Or can the longie be his pants, so to speak? How does that work? And since I'm guessing the wool will absorb the wet, than won't everything just get wet? I'm confused (obviously).

And, once I figure this part out, have any parents out there successfully used a bamboo (or hemp)/longie combo with daycare providers? I welcome any suggestions about this!

Thanks for your help!

I like both the hemp and bamboo dipes I've made for my son. Just as a side note. We also use pockets. I tend to switch back and forth, but I do tend to use a pocket style when he's with a sitter because I figure it's easier for them.

Longies will work as a cover. They absorb the pee, and after a while, won't be soaked, but may feel slightly damp. The are not "waterproof" like we usually think of. But they are nice.

The bad thing would be you'd have to pack a bunch of pairs of longies because once they get damp, you'll have to rotate to a different pair. And while wool doesn't have to be washed every time they are wet, they do take several hours to hang dry, in my experience.

In my opinion, the BG would be easier for your daycare, then you could use wool at home. Personally I'd also be afraid of what might happen to my wool. They need special care - you can't just throw them in with everything else to wash or whatever. I don't know - it just seems a little trickier for other people. KWIM? But - Mama knows best! These are just my opinions.

First, about longies - wool can hold up to 40% of its weight in moisture before feeling wet and also contains lanolin, which creates a natural waterproof barrier and acts as an antibacterial agent. So that's how wool covers and longies work. (I have a page just about wool and wool care on the site that's in my siggy, if you want to read more.)

I agree with the PP that pockets or AIOs would probably be better daycare diapers, and save the wool for at home.
