I'm considering switching my girl to cloth dipes when I start SAHMing, in about a month. She's nearly 19 months now. She's only starting to express an interest in elimination things (like commenting when the dog pees) and has never peed or pooped in her potty. So, I think it'll be a while before potty learning happens.

My questions are:

1) Are there diapers that really are one-size, that will potentially work for child #2 as well?
2) How do you find decent used cloth diapers?
3) How many would I need? DD currently goes through about 5 disposables a day.
4) Is DD likely to be happier in cloth? Less happy? Should I just buy one or two and try them out for a few days before I commit?
5) What else am I not thinking of?

Thanks for any insights, ideas, suggestions...

I switched a little while ago, when my ds was 15 months. It went wonderfully well! I keep telling people that if I had known how easy it was, he would have been cloth diapered his whole life.

1) I think the BumGenius one-size ones do work. My friend has been using them on her son, from at least 3 months to now, almost 17 months. I haven't tried them, though. I really like the BumGenius 2.0's (all-in-ones), they feel nicer than the one-size ones, but the next baby will have to wait before s/he'll fit in them.
I plan to ask for a bunch of different sizes instead of baby clothes and such.

2) Dunno, we got new. I think there are used ones on the trading post, and sometimes on eBay, though they get pulled when eBay catches them.

3) We have 13 prefolds and 15 bumgeniuses. I wash them two or three times a week, and don't usually run out. I put him in the BumGeniuses for night and naps, or when we're going out, and the rest of the time he runs around in a coverless prefold to air out.

4) My ds didn't seem to care. However, I did notice after a while that he wasn't peeing in his coverless prefolds very often, and when he did, he said "uh-oh!" So we bought him a potty, and he's been going in it at least once a day.
He never seemed to notice that he was wet when he was in disposables.

5) No idea.
I've been really happy with it. DS has only worn two disposables since we started, in the beginning, not counting our camping trip. I'm actually starting to worry that we aren't going to use up the disposables we already had before he outgrows them.

We just started at 10 months, so a little earlier, but I wanted to put in my 2 cents, too.

1) Are there diapers that really are one-size, that will potentially work for child #2 as well?
I am very pleased with the bG OS pocket, too.

2) How do you find decent used cloth diapers?
We have mainly purchased new, but I have friends who say that craigslist has been wonderful for this purpose.

3) How many would I need? DD currently goes through about 5 disposables a day.
My DD was going through 5-6 disposables a day, and goes through 6-8 (depending on poop!) cloth diapers a day. I currently have 8 bG pockets, 1 bG AIO, and 4 fitted dipes/2 covers. We launder daily right now, and I don't mind it. I am waiting on my last order, and then I will be able to go every other day. If you want to launder daily, go with 8-10, if you want to go every other day, double that.

4) Is DD likely to be happier in cloth? Less happy? Should I just buy one or two and try them out for a few days before I commit?
I bought 2 to start, loved it, and my next order couldn't get here fast enough! I think that this is a great way to start though, just in case.

Good luck...I am so glad I switched and wish I had done it sooner!

We started a little over a month ago when DS was 17 months. I started out with 2 BG AIOs, 2 BG one size pockets and 2 Thirsties cotton fitteds with BSWW cover. That was a great start because it let me sample the different types and see what I liked best and we've adjusted and grown from there.

I think the one size are fine, but my DS will only be in them for a few more months as he is close to the ends of the velcro. On BG, even though the OS says it goes up to 35 pounds and the large AIO says up to 30 pounds, I've found that the AIO is much roomier and he has plenty of growth room in it. I also think the two size dipes fit better than the one size, but that's my opinion.

Craigslist is great for used, as is diaperswappers. I have only bought new, but that's just me.

We go through 6-8 a day, plus a nighttime heavy duty diaper. I wash every day, so we don't need a huge stash.

My DS is TONS happier in them. He actually runs in hides if he even sees a sposie now. My MIL tried to put one on him and threw an all out tantrum. I could never get him to sit still to put sposies on, but with CDs he lies there nice. Plus there is nothing cuter than seeing them run around in the house with just a little CD on.

I'd say try what I did - an AIO, a pocket & a fitted with cover - just one of each to start and then add on from there once you see what works best for you and your LO.

I am so glad you posted this question! I was just about to post the same one as I am also considering switching to cloth and my son is almost 18 months. I know boys potty learn much later than girls and I guess I have been putting off the switch b/c I was intimidated by the whole process. So thanks to all the momma's and their suggestions...now off to learn the lingo

1) Are there diapers that really are one-size, that will potentially work for child #2 as well? We use haute pockets for my 15 month old son...he's about 30 pounds, and the diapers also work for my 4 month old daughter, who is about 14 pounds.
2) How do you find decent used cloth diapers? I haven't yet
3) How many would I need? DD currently goes through about 5 disposables a day. Hmmm...I'm still building my stash and only have a days worth, so I will skip this question
4) Is DD likely to be happier in cloth? Less happy? Should I just buy one or two and try them out for a few days before I commit? You may try just buying a few. My son was 14 months when we switched and he doesn't really notice a difference. I notice a lot less leaks!
5) What else am I not thinking of?

1) Are there diapers that really are one-size, that will potentially work for child #2 as well?

yes I use the eco baby grow with mes or there is always prefolds. should be no problem with other babys but for the newborn stage you will prob want something else. i know some moms diagree with me but for newborns I LOVE kissaluvs. nice tight fit aeround anysized newborn baby leg.

2) How do you find decent used cloth diapers?

I go through the local natural baby store
or online... livejournal has a good natural cloth comunity.

3) How many would I need? DD currently goes through about 5 disposables a day.

most older babys use about 8 diapers a day. personaly i would have more on hand though.

4) Is DD likely to be happier in cloth? Less happy? Should I just buy one or two and try them out for a few days before I commit?

i'd just switch. if shes unhappy about it it will probaly only be beacuse she can feel that she's wet and doesn't like it. (yay for speeding up potty training)
