Consitpation in 8 month old-Help!

672 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Kindermama
My dd is 8 months old and we have battled constipation since starting solids. I dont know what else to do! All the solids she gets are high fiber veggies, fresh fruit, I have cut out bananas and rice cereal. She will occasionaly take juice very rarely water by itself She doesnt seem to be uncomfortable and she is not constipated all the time.
She always has a stool during the day, usually more then one but like today it was like little rabbit pellets!
Im very frustrated and dont know what else to do for her.
Anybody have suggestions?

we've been dealing w/ this for a month ---

3-5 small dry poops a day that don't bother 8.5 mo dd, but then about 1x a week or so she gets one that seems to, and then we use a sppository. all better, then it begins again.
we upped juice (pitted ones work best) and prunes, but still! a tsp of flax oil in food seems to do wonders. we cut out grains and bananas, too, though millet seems ok (but not barley, rice, or oats). no formula here. either.

i posted about this before and someone suggested allergies, but i'm thinking it's more likely just a pokey gi system (she still has no teeth, so maybe that's a sign?)

since we seems to stay just this side of manageable, i've not gone to the ped about it, but will mention it next time.

a friend dealt w/ this for over a year and said raw milk works WONDERS. Also there is an rx called siimulax (?) that is not addictive that can help, she said.

i know how frustrating this is! hoping for more responses...

Rice cereal totally constipated my dd. We used oatmeal and barley cereal instead and it made a world of difference. You also might want to consider giving your dd some essential fatty acids. This lubricates the bowels and is good for the brain, skin and hair. Also some probiotics. HTH. Good luck, Mama.
my dd had a slow digestive system since birth. When she was on breastmilk alone, she at times would go up to 10 days without having a bowel movement. but was never uncomfortable. When she started solids at 8 months (she was ripping them out of our hands) her stool became very firm, not quite of the rabbit pellet variety but firm, at least she ws going once a day, but it was uncomfortable and took a long time to pass and is was impossible for her to go in a diapers (I think the poop hitting the diaper made it too hard for her to push out) same here, we got rid of the bananas and all obvioius grains, we never fed her rice cereal anyway.

But one day last month at 10 months, the problem just went away! all on its own, not she can eat her bananas and cheerios, and her stool is soft (makes for a mess in the diapers lol) and she has no more problems at all..

just wanted to let you know that with age it can get better.

How much solids is she having? I would SERIOUSLY reduce them. Perhaps drop them all together for awhile.

Right now she has solids three times a day- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She would be way to hungry if I stopped the solids all together. Maybe I should try to figure out if she has any food allergies to anything I have been giving her?
Do you think her body may just still be adjusting to the food?

I think three times a day is a lot of food for an 8 month old, maybe cut the food down to breakfast and dinner? and only fruits and veggies no bananas?

My dd is 11 months and is only eating once a day, sometimes two times
DD is 10 months and only started solids within the last month. Since birth she has been a once/week pooper. Now since starting solids she is going almost daily but only little bits and she's crying as she goes
. She only eats a bit of solids and the majority of her nourishment is breastmilk so I'm not sure what to do. For now we are going to cut back on solids and just give her a veggie or fruit once in a while. Too bad, because she LOVES banana.

Cut the solids. I'd go down to one meal and maybe one snack. Her body is telling you it can't handle them. Increase your nursing.

definately the problem, like I said when my dd 's body was ready for the solid food the slow stool problem disappeared.

I agree with alegna. That's an awful lot of solids for an 8 mo old. You didn't say if you are breastfeeding or formula feeding. Either way, she's getting too much solids, she can't handle so much yet. Increase her milk intake. FF babies are much more prone to constipation than bf babies.

The GI tract doesn't fully mature until after 12 months of age, and even then her nutritional needs should mostly be met by breastmilk.
I think reducing the amount of solids and upping liquids would be good, To soften the stools get prune juice, strain the pulp with a fine mesh strainer and feed a spoonful of pulp to your baby a couple times a day. This worked with my 9mo. baby, but his stools weren't as dry as you seem to be describing.

You shouldn't need prune juice- if you do chances are you're pushing too much in the way of solids. Breastmilk should be the nutrition for the whole first year. Solids are just for play.

She seems to be complaining of hard stools, which can certainly be remedied by prunes as she's reducing solids and upping liquids.
This is really timely - we're battling the same issues with my DD. She'll be fine for awhile, but then I'll go and do something stupid like add some oatmeal cereal with iron (even just a teaspoon of the stuff in several tablespoons of fruit) and she'll slow down and need help after a couple days.

We recently started finger foods and I'm thinking the organic "cheerios" might be to blame for the last slow down.

What works for us is 100% homemade grains - I toast grains and then grind them up and use stuff like quinoa and brown rice instead of the boxed cereals. She eats a lot of fruit, but rarely bananas. I also give her organic prune juice most days.

She'll be nine months old in a couple weeks and only gets two solid "meals" a day, and these are always followed by nursing. I'd say she gets maybe 4-5 ounces of "food" a day, an ounce or so of juice and the rest is breast milk on demand. We've had to use the glycerin suppository about 5 times since starting solids in earnest, and I've been worried about what negative effects that might have. So while most moms are gradually increasing solids, I'm usually cutting back to a couple days of just breast milk and maybe a fruit "meal" and then slowly building solids back up. I'm really encouraged by the PP who said that their DC outgrew this as their bodies matured to the point of truly being ready for solids.

ditto. I went through this at the same with my dd. cut back! They dont need 3 solid meals a day if they are BF on demand. She is now 12mos and only eats finger food snacks and maybe dinner with us. that's it!
