Constantly switching is driving me insane

490 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Momtwice
My 15 month old is constantly popping of one boob and going to the other and then he goes back after only a couple of seconds, and then does the same thing all over again

In a matter of 15 seconds he can switch 7 times and it is just driving me nuts
And he will do this for 20 minutes at a time
Is it a sign of no milk availabe, and that he needs more solid food, or is it just a habit??

Please help me before I commit myself to the nearest ward

Looking for advice too. My dd does the same thing, though she's not as extreme as your son.

My 25-month-old does this CONSTANTLY. She will pop up and say, "Nuh nuh side?" Nuh nuh is our name for nursing. And then she will turn her body around so she is in the correct position and tear at my shirt and just go at it. She will even say it in her sleep while franctically searching for the other boobie. Sometimes I try to say no because the other side might be sore from her nursing acrobatics and she just FLIPS out. I usually have to end up giving in. She MUST have the other side because now there is just something terribly wrong with the side she's on. And watch out if I offer the wrong side when she comes up asking to nurse. Ohhhh boy, do I pay for that one!

I was going to say that I think it is more of a habit, at least for my dd. Maybe there are subtle differences between the sides at different times and now they are trying to assert themselves with their choices? Sometimes, it is because one side has ran out of milk, I can tell when one breast is obviously empty and she switches sides and is still vigorously nursing. There are also times when she makes a face like she tasted something horrible and smacks her lips and says, "ewww, gross nuh nuh" and then must change sides. So maybe there are differences in taste sometimes? That one I just can't figure out!

I know how tough it can be

I think it is a little bit of everything.

They'll do it so that each side gets emptied at about the same time so that one feeding is actually fully emptying both boobs. One side alone is no longer enough per feeding and having to start over on the other boob to get past the foremilk to the heavy hind milk is no longer the way they desire to drink, ime, at least that is how my boys did and do it. They like(d) to empty each breast at the same pace together.

It can also be boredom/playing/not really hungry/playing......lol.

You can certainly try more solids, or to encourage one side only (tell him the other nursie is sleeping), but it might not work. It didn't/doesn't for my kids.
I think I'm just so used to it that I don't really think much about it. Sorry I can't help more!

My 16 month is also doing this! Driving me bonkers! She also gets really mad if I pull my shirt down, even if she hasn't nursed in a couple minutes. Does anyone elses kid do this? It's getting to the point where I put Sesame Street on so that I can just sit down and not have a toddler on me (though this plan isn't workiing this morning!)
Normal!

Could be an instinctive way to keep up your supply, could be a fun game, but whatever reason it's normal.
