So, my almost exclusively breastfed baby appears to be constipated. For quite a few weeks now there has been a big change in his elimination pattern. He went from being an 8-14 day pooper who was easily EC'd for his poops to a baby who is pooping the tiniest little poops a few times a day. Sometimes they were so small, they'd just lodge in his butt crack and not even touch the diaper. In the beginning he was straining to pass these tiny ones so we did some glycerin suppositories and out came a huge adult-looking poop.

After that, he was still pooping small amounts but didn't seem to be straining. Another week or two and he still hadn't had a big poop so we did glycerin again and NOTHING. It's been 5 days or so since the glycerin and he has started to pass some hard poops. They aren't pellet-like, like adult constipation, but hard enough that I could peel them off of the diaper!

So, he is almost EBF because he doesn't like to be spoon-fed and eats probably less than 1/2 tsp of food a day, IF that. And he gets a good deal of water because he likes to drink from a cup and straw so I doubt that he could be constipated do to the food/water thing.

We've tried to get him to drink grape juice but he pretty much hates it.

So, what else can we do for his constipation? Why is he getting constipated? Or is this just a normal change to a more mature poop since he's 10-months old?

Thanks!

Any ideas for relieving constipation?

If he's just eating a little bit in the way of solids, try dropping them all together for a week or so and see what happens. Encourage more nursing and increase your water.

It's possible that there is still more blocking him up from when he was constipated before. You might try 1-2 more suppository poops and see if that "frees" things.

I would think that unless his small amount of food a day is incredibly binding that his poops would be similar to how they were before.

Not sure. What exactly is he eating? Maybe we can spot a problem in there for you. Also, just making sure, you're not giving him vitamins, are you? If so, they could be the culprit.

I don't know what kind of baby food you are giving him, but don't use the baby rice stuff. Rice is constipating, and there is added iron in it that will block him up further. That stuff blocked up my dd. She is usually an every day pooper, and that stuff made her not go for 4 days. I gave her 2 oz of prune juice. She got some cramps from it (or was she just uncomfy from not going for 4 days, I dunno) and then had a huge blowout. The poop shot everywhere! (sorry if tmi) She was 7.5 months at the time.

Some solids are constipating (rice cereal. bananas, etc) so I'd start there. Then I would up my water intake and bf as much as possible.

Also, try here:

http://www.askdrsears.com/faq/ci2.asp

http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/t081100.asp
