Anyone know if I can get contacts online w/o a current prescription? I just got my eyes checked out last year and now they are saying that you have to have a new prescription every year in order to get your contacts. i just do not have the $70+ dollars right now to get the exam plus the $40+ for the contacts. i just got an exam last march and now i need another one! This is just another way for them to make money off ppl!! i know that they just want to catch any problems with your eyes that you might have but come on! so does anyone know where i could get the contacts or does everyone HAVE to have a prescription?

Can you call your optometrist and get a new prescription from him or her? Mine would write a new one for me a year after the last exam. Or can you try a different online place?

Everyplace needs a new rx once a year, to my knowledge. Even the eye dr won't give new ones w/o a new rx. The ONLY exception I've known was a small town eye dr my sister used and they kept sending her contacts for like 3 years without a new rx. Definitely not the norm.

I also have to get a new prescription every year. Stupid cuz it is every two years for my glasses. It irritates me to no end. Same with my birthcontrol.

I'm in the same boat except my eyam would be $130 plus $40 for the contacts. Thankfully I have back up glasses but I really hate wearing them, however with no extra cash at the moment I will be wearing them for at least another month or so.

I have yet to find any place online where you can get them w/o a current prescription, there used to be a few places but it seems they no longer sell them like that. (I tried a few weeks ago)

It would be illegal to sell them to you without a current presciption.

Our Costco has eye exams pretty cheap... they're also the cheapest place around to get contacts. I save enough on contacts to cover the membership cost and still save about $50 a year.

and for the future

I have been known to order new contacts just before my old prescription is about to expire. Generaly just a couple extra months worth because I'm having trouble finding time to go to the optometrist (my script changes enough that I really value going frequently as a general rule but sometimes life gets chaotic)

I really stock up, not just a couple of month's worth! My eyes haven't changed in 20 years, I know I am pretty safe getting a couple of years ahead so I usually go right before the prescription is up and get another years worth or so.

Really? My doc will only sell me 12 months worth, but I usually manage to make those last 2x as long as they are supposed to. My new eye doc says that as long as they are clean and cared for, you can really wear them until they seem old or torn. My old doc said throw them away after two weeks or else!

Maybe if I bought from someoneother than my doctor-- they will sell you an unlimited amount as long as your prescription is isn't expired? ie. Not just 12 months worth?

Another question for you contact wearers. My new prescription (in the "spectacle" section) says "Special addition" then has a check box for "computer" "music" and "other" ????? What is that?

And, my spectacle prescription says "expires 2 years from date" but the contact portion says 1 year.

Yeah, you can use the prescription to buy 12 months' worth from one place and another 12 months' worth from somewhere else.

they require a current rx and if you don't fax one they require your eye drs info and call to verify, I know because I just ordered from them.

I know what you mean, it is very annoying. Every time I go for a new script its usually 6 months over due and I get a huge lecture from the eye doctor about how me wearing my contacts for 3 months when they are the 2 week kind is dangerous. I have worn contacts over 10 years, I also have edema in my eyes from wearing them (edema is temporary, it will go away if I stop wearing them) and vascular neogenisis which is esentially extra blood vessles growing around the iris of my eyes because of long term wear, that doesnt go away. He likes to check up on both of these things when I go in for my script. I think I am fine, but who knows, I guess you can tell I am a long time and extend the time of lense wearer. :/

He also mentioned Bauch and Lomb having some big case right now because the fluid they were selling wasnt good enough and some people's contacts grew a fungus that harmed them in various ways, from eye infection to blindness, yadda yadda. I havent looked up any of this but he said they are even trying to phase out the 2 week lenses for week or less lenses because when you open the package there is a potential for fungus growth. I am sure in 99% of people thats not an issue, but it is all for legality and covering their butt's sake.

I know 5 years ago I had an eye doc who wasnt nearly as strict about the time limits at all.

anyway, what a ramble eh? moral of my ramble I guess is I feel your pain, but I guess there is some reason out there to "check in" with contact wearers at regular intervals and for whatever this litigation is doing to Bauch and Lomb, my particular doc takes it very serious.

Oh here is a blurb about the thing he was talking about
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bausch_&_Lomb#ReNu

I used to wear mine for 2 weeks at a time - I started wearing contacts in 1980 and started wearing them for two weeks at a times a few years later. Four years ago, an eye doctor scared the heck out of me with the vascular neogenisis thing, and I started taking them out every night. It's really better this way! My eyes used to sting whenever I didn't have contacts in, and now they don't, and all the extra veins are gone...

I am trying to go back to contacts now, as after my son was born i just wore my glasses. There is a place called amaricas best, they have this thing were you pay 99 and you get 3 years of eye exames, and 10% off all contacts. That is where I was gonna go.

If you have enough for the exam, go get one and they will give you at least one sample pair, maybe 2 or 3 if you tell them your situation. But they always give one one to wear and see if you like them.
