Contagious Kid... WWYD?

My 10 month old has the chicken pox (no, you can't come over, my on-line group already has dibs on her germs!) :LOL

She has no fever, no irritability, no fussiness... she's an amazing child.

Anyhow, my DH is out of town and I am going stir-crazy. Obviously, I would not send her to a playgroup or anything. That's not fair. You never know who has immunity issues that may make CP dangerous.

But would you go for a walk with her in the sling? In the stroller? Would you go to the grocery store with her in the sling and warn people to stay away?

It's a beautiful day out there!

When my daughter was exposed to chicken pox and possibly contagious, I stayed away from playgroups and warned pregnant friends about her. But the coffee shop, grocery store, etc were fair game! People take the risk of getting various germs and rashes by moving thru the world... no reason to hole yourself up inside. It's not like she has something horrible.
If she is contagious, and I can't remember at what stages of chicken pox are contagious.... I would take her out. Definately for a walk, and maybe to the grocery store, although I would keep her in the sling to keep people from touching her or freaking out :LOL

When we go to the store, I figure we are going to pick up a few germs. That is different than a playgroup.
If she feels well enough to go out with you, take her. She has the chicken pox, not the plague!

I'd definately go for a walk. I don't know about the grocery store though. Maybe during a time when it isn't very busy. Her immune system is probably low right now and you wouldn't want her to pick up anything else.

i didn't take mine out to the grocery or parks when they had it last month. my thought is, there may be people there whose immune systems are compromised (cancer, etc) and have to grocery shop and it was my duty knowing full well they were contagious to not give it to anyone that didn't want it. sure people know there are germs at the store but chicken pox can be very damaging to someone with compromised immune systems or pregnant and may not even know it yet.

I would take out for a walk or let them play outside. I let the neighbors all know my kids had CP before they let them play together
if your child is contagious I'd stay home.
Mine just got the 'pox and we're staying home. I'd imagine it's hard with a dh out of town, though! My dh comes home at 5 and then I am out of the house; I don't like being cooped up all day either.
Hmm... I would definately take my kids out, but then again I have no choice! But I would go at times when the stores would not be too busy.
I'd go for a walk, and keep her in the sling. I'd stay outside as much as possible if she's potentially contageous, but if I needed to get food for us to eat, I would go to the market but definitely not take her out of the sling in there, and try to pick a less busy time to shop.

The park in the stroller is probably OK, but if your back can handle it, the sling is a safer choice (fewer kids poking their faces at her.)
could you at least mail me a lollipop???

:LOL

I'd take her out. There are much, much worse things out there than cp.

I'm only semi-joking about that lolli.

my husband caught them from my son who gave them to his sister. my DH got them 2 days after my DD did. it sucked! my DH was miserable and complained constantly. we were pretty much quarantined for a month by the time it went through everyone. we didn't go to playdates, etc unless we knew everyone there wanted them. April was a crappy month......LOL
I'd go for a walk with her, but I wouldn't take her to the grocery store.
When my dd had them at 10months I took her out. The CP are contagious for a few days before they break out until all spots have crusted over. Hers were almost all crusted over when I took her out. It was right before Xmas and there were things I had to get before we left.
I took my kiddos out with CP. Not everywhere but we went for walks and toward the tail end of CP we went to the store. There are worse germs than CP at Walmart!

That said when I took them to the Dr to have it documented...they treated us as if we had the plague.

I teach music classes and I did keep my kids away during the contagious time.

How do you catch the pox from a contagious person? I though you had to have saliva contact. Thats why you pass around the lollipop at the chicken pox parties.

Is your child going to lick anyone at the coffee shop?

No, but its in your saliva and have you ever watched a kid sneeze? It goes flying everywhere. They don't cover their mouths. My 6yo got it first, we didn't know anyone that had it so he had to get it at school. And at the time no one in his class got it so I am assuming he probably got it from someone on the bus?

I agree that a toddler or an older child would transfer the virus via sneezing etc.

But I respectfully disagree about a baby in a sling.

I would be interested to hear what the OP decided to do!
