Hey all, I've got PCOS and I'm really trying to find natural ways of dealing with it as an alternative to Metformin (a diabetic drug that helps people with insulin resistance control their blood sugar). I've read some very interesting things on the Dr. Mercola site about PCOS/insulin resistance, and he recommends several supplements (scroll down on that page, but the whole article - 4 pages worth- is worth a read).
He recommends:
Chromium picolinate - helps control blood sugar
Vanadyl Sulfate - mimics insulin giving the pancreas a break
Glutamine Powder - helps control carb cravings
Cod liver oiil/fish oil - bumps up the Omega 3s
Vitamin E oil - counteracts some negative effect of Omega 3s
Magnesium supplements
Of course he also recommends excercise (I'm already doing this), eliminating carbs from the diet, or at least substantially reducing them, and increasing the mono-saturated fats in the diet.
I have already given up drinking sodas and caloric drinks (I drink about a cup of milk a day). However, I'm having a hard time giving up processed carbs and eating more veggies. I'm working on it, slowly but surely.
For those of you who take supplements or have PCOS have you tried any of these? What are the best brands to buy? Do you take liquids or pills? Which is better?
Thanks!
