..to use wool

I've been reading here and everyone is in love with wool, but I can't see spending the $$ on it. Is it really that awesome? If it is then I'll deff have to get me one, but if it's just a typical dipe cover then...

What is everyones take on this?

Wool is the ideal material for diaper covers. It is natural and breathable. It can absorb 30% of its weight without feeling damp on the outside. It is cool and summer and warm in winter. Try it and I think you will love it.
I love the look and feel of wool. That said, I think it is more of an expensive luxury for ME. I use pockets and PFs (coverless) and hardly ever use my wool. My ds sweats in it right now (heat index in the 100s) so I go coverless during the day. When I go out I use FBs or Wonderoos. They might be warm also, but at least I have no problem with compression wicking and I am 95% of the time in A/C. However, that said, once it gets cooler here I will use wool shorts and pants at home for covers. But I prefer pockets for when I go out or travel.
I'm a new wool convert, and I love it! I've just got covers right now -- all side snap wool covers. But, I love them. I love that my kids' bums can breath well -- I love how soft they are -- and I even loved washing/lanolizing. It is expensive, but you can find good deals -- if you look at MaiMaiBB on hyenacart, she has wool covers for $30 or less -- the ones that are seconds or not hand-dyed are less. Stacinator wool is pretty inexpensive (I have three of those -- one each size). Sugarpeas wool is readily available and cheap -- it was my first wool cover.

I've now got some wool soakers (pull on) on their way to me, as well as an embroidered wool cover from Muttaqin Baby, and a cover from MaiMaiBB (just scored that this morning).

A friend of mine has knit a set of wool shorts for my DD, but I haven't received those yet, so I can't say much for knit/crocheted stuff. But, I'm sure its great.

I love wool -- don't know if I have a good reason to or not, but I love it! I use my wool covers more often than my Bummis SWW now.

oh, forgot...

there is a soaker on hyenacart for $10, I believe. can't remember who's stocking... do a search on medium wool soaker -- i think it was the last one listed.. navy blue...

eta: $20 at one stitch two stitch boutique.

Wool is truly a sort of miracle fiber. It is almost like nature made it just for use as a diaper cover. As the pp said, it is wonderfully breathable, has antibacterial properties and will absorb 30% of its weight in liquid before feeling wet. Also, it is totally natural. I have many, many wool covers. They are practically all we use except for the random AIOs and pockets. I am embarrassed to say that I rarely wash our covers. With over a dozen in rotation, changing the cover every time I change the diaper, they just don't ever seem to get dirty. They are so easy to care for, just air them out between wearings and wash if they start to smell or get soiled (which for us is literally every 2 months or so.)

Hmmm...I would love to try one, now I just have to slip it past DH...lol.
wool doesnt have to be expensive, the most Ive ever spent on a soaker was the price of the yarn(I knit, LOL)
only another month and a half and you can go to the TP where you can find good cheap soakers. but there are also other boards with TP like forums until you can access ours.
you can also find em on ebay for cheap, just post a link here if you need to know if its a good price or quality.
know anywhere I can get a pattern? my mom knits, I might beg her to knit me one...she usually can only knit blankets, but she managed to knit a hat last winter
here is a free one knit partially in the round: http://fernandfaerie.com/freesoakerpattern.html
and one knit completely flat: http://www.birdcrossstitch.com/soakers/pattern/ (scroll down some for the free one)
definitely check out ebay and the TP here. Wool is great but you dont have to spend a fortune on it to get good covers.

And if you need further convincing: Gabriels wool (Chololate Merino Crochet)

Lol, I am in the minority here, but I tried wool and didn't really care for it, all my other CD friends kept telling me I'd love it. Luckily, I did not spend an arm and leg on it, although I did buy a lot of fitteds, and now both the wool covers and fitteds are just sitting around un-used. Most ppl who convert seem to love it, DH and I just still preferred the ease of our FBs. If you are interested in some basic wool covers (and nice fitteds), send me an email. I've been too lazy (and tired) to post all of my CD stuff that needs sold on the TP. The wool worked well (never leaked), we just didn't feel it was very trim, and my DH didn't like having a seperate cover and fitted, but that's just us.

Love that soaker and LOVE your baby's face in that photo! What an adorable baby. Where did you get that beautiful soaker? My grandmother crochets soakers for me but none of them are that gorgeous. It reminds me of a latte. Yummy!!!
I resisted wool for a long time...because C'MON! How could something with HOLES in it work as a cover. Plus, washing sounded too difficult.

Well finally when our SWW started wicking we tried a pair of wool pants...and you know what? WOOL IS AMAZING! DH loves it and puts wool over all our AIOs.
I love love love wool.

When you have kiddos with sensitive skin, you learn very quickly to
wool!

I could actually use anything on my first son. My second son is a different story. All I can use is pockets or wool. The pockets draw the moisture away, so that helps. The wool breathes, so that helps. I can only use a regular PUL or nylon cover very briefly or his whole bum gets bright red!

Go get some wool! If you don't like it, you can always sell it on the TP. I bet you'll love it.

Well, it is simply beautiful. I am such a coffee fanatic that I can really appreciate a soaker named Chocolate Latte. If you get bored of it please send it my way!

Unfortunately I did not get into wool until it was already hot here. But I have several beautiful shorties knitted by Becky that I can't wait to pull out in the fall. I just prefer letting my ds go coverless around home during the heat. Even though the wool breathes it still gets hot with a PF and wool. But I will be buying some wool longies for winter. That seems so much more practical to me. My ds will have to wear pants, so why not some wool ones that are beautiful. But when we go out I will put them over FBs! I hate using PFs or fitted when I leave home since I have to change them so often (sometimes every 30 minutes). When I put my ds in FBs or other pockets like that he stays dry for hours. I could not give that up. Especially for night time. My ds goes 12 hours in a FB with 2 cottonbabies inserts and wakes up dry in the morning. It is like a miracle. I had to use sposies this week while on holiday and I had to change him in the middle of the night or he would leak. What a pain in the butt.

Anyway, I think everyone should at least try wool. I think you could get by with one or 2 covers and use your cheaper covers for backup. But I can tell you it is a slippery slope. I have 2 soakers and 2 shorties and I am not a huge wool user! But I just love the stuff so darn much because it is so soft and pretty. I am learning how to crochet so I can make my own. My soakers are the dandelion dreamer ones that you can buy the pattern for, and they cost me $5 (for the yarn I bought for my grandmother to make them for me).

I started diapering with some used stacinator felt covers. It was fairly affordable and they worked great. You can spend lots of money on really pretty custom wool. You can also make your own from recycled wool sweaters. It is definitely worth a try. I now have gotten rid of all my regular covers in favor of wool.
Wool can be bought used and in great shape because it is treated "special"
Hand washed and air dried. So lovley and soft treat your self to one! Buy it a little large and then you will get more use out of it!
