Related to the recent cork v. bamboo thread - I am interested in finding out how each one holds out with lots of pets (5 dogs and cats at the moment), in a very high-traffic room (the living room). Please help me choose between the two. I have heard that dog and cat nails can scratch or dent the bamboo - is this correct?
Most of the time what will be scratched on bamboo is the finish, not the wood itself. And a dent would take more like dropping canned goods from counter height. The cork I've seen has all been pretty durable, though...
I'd probably contact the manufacturers of the product and ask them about wear and tear with pets. See what they say. Some may have a warranty against damages that covers pets, and some may void the warranty because of pets.
i would not go with cork. you really want a woven bamboo like ecotimber has come out with. it is much much harder then regular bamboo. and gorgeous as well.
Bamboo's surface is hard. And that's the problem. It's resistant about denting but not about scratching because it doesn't accept surface protectants very well. So it would get scratched up very easy.
My friend got cork flooring and it's not what I expected at all. Silly me thought the cork would really be on top (like a cork board! LOL) but of course that would be way too easily broken up... Her cork has a thick layer of polyutherane or similar on top.
It insulates well and seems resistant to scratching.
So without any other information as a pet owner I'd probably be leaning towards the cork with that surface stuff on top...
We have bamboo and while it does not dent - it has gotten scratched to hell from our dog. Most of the damage occurred right after we put it in and he was learning to walk in the house. He was used to the traction on carpet before so it took a bit of time.
You can't really notice the scratches unless the light is hitting it right - or you are looking for them.
If you do go with bamboo - teach your pets now not to run in the house and keep their nails clipped or dremmeled very short.
: I'm trying to figure out what to resurface our stairs with. I am leaning towards cork, but I don't know if our cat will claw it up. So I'm interested in what everyone thinks about cork.
Isn't bamboo harder than cork? I would think that bamboo is more resistant to being scratched and dented than cork, but I've never had either type of floor in my home. Does anyone know?

Bamboo is harder than cork but it is the surface protectant that gives it scratch resistance. Cork floor accpet the protectant layer more easily.
Because of it's hardness bamboo resists denting very well but because of it's surface it gets scratched easier.
