We are still cosleeping with our 14 mth old and he wakes up every 15 min to nurse, I will just get him to sleep, turn over and bam he is awake and crying again to nurse!!!!! I can't take it anymore, I am at my wits end. Do any of you know how I can night wean him and not wean him during the day? I do not want to give up nursing, but I do want to get some sleep. I have 4 other kiddos to tend to during the day and this little babe leaves me exausted and I am crabby and moody! We are TTC #6 right now and he needs to start sleeping so he and I can get some rest!

He use to suck his thumb and never did this but all of the sudden stopped doing that, anyway I can get him hooked on the thumb again? Thanks for any help you can give me!

I hope you get some responses, because I'm feeling pretty frustrated with nursing at night too. My 19 mo. old drives me nuts sometimes just wanting to sleep at the breast. I'm sorry, but those teeth grating on my nipple and that tight latch are really hard to sleep through!

We've tried giving him water when he tries to nurse. We've tried Dh comforting him back to sleep. I've tried rolling over and letting him stir for a bit. Sometimes these things work, sometimes they don't.

I'm not wanting to wean him (I don't think, anyway) but if I had to chose between this for another 2 years and weaning...

Here's what my husband and I started doing - my hubby wakes up fairly early to get ready for work, so he goes to bed before me. I would nurse ds, and then my husband would put him to sleep - actually lay down in bed with him, sing him to sleep, etc. Since we've started this, he'll usually sleep a straight 6-7 hours before waking - then I'll nurse him, and he'll fall back to sleep pretty hard for another 5-6.

The only problems I have had so far was when he was teething, and he was waking up every 2 hours to nurse and wanted to stay latched on, but that stopped once the teeth broke thru.

On the nites when I put ds to sleep, I usually have to nurse him to sleep (because he knows I have the milk!) and he tends to wake up more frequently. Sometimes I'll go ahead and nurse all night, but on the nights when I'm really tired, I'll just snuggle him, rock him, and we'll eventually fall asleep together.

Hope this helps!

Have you looked to see if the molars are starting to come in? Our latest is 17mo b'H and has spent two months on these molars already, and I'm ready to yank them out myself ... Anyway, dealing with the teething puts her back to sleep.

FWIW, we tried to nightwean our eldest when he was 18mo. It didn't work and made us all miserable ... and we haven't even considered it with the others.

Check the gums, IMO.

i would guess teething might be playing a role. how big is your bed? i ask because ds totally slef-night-weaned when we pushed two beds together. he and i sleep on one and dh (6'5" and big night tosser) sleeps on the other. i also sleep *so* much better now (though the night )

At what age did you start the ritual where you nurse and your baby goes to sleep with dad in the bed? I would LOVE to do that, but at 13 months I don't think my girl would go for it - she always wants the boobie to sleep with unless in the stroller (but stroller doesn't work for me, only dad and others....)

Thanks so much ladies!!

Mase always goes to sleep with DH then when we go to bed he must smell me because he wakes up immediately to nurse! So I nurse him and he falls asleep but about 2 hrs later he is up every 15 min if I take my bb away. I do think he could be teething to because he is definetly out of sorts My bed is a king size.

My 2 yr old weaned himself at 16mths old because I was 7 mths PG and I guess my milk supply left because one day he just stopped and that was it and he slept through the night since he weaned.

Kcocat,

My husband started putting him to sleep when he was around 12 months (he's 14 months now) - so for about 2 months now. It was hard the first week or so - my husband had to do a lot of rocking, singing, etc., but now it's a routine and my ds will fall asleep within 10 minutes of laying down with my husband (ha! the first nite that happened we both did a little happy dance )

And sometimes he still wakes up when I come into bed, and I'll nurse him - he'll fall asleep fairly quickly as long as I don't make too much noise coming in.

I know this will all change once his molars start to come in....but we're enjoying it now.

Good luck!

I kept a sippy cup next to my bed for when my 2 year old would wake up. At 29 months I took a 3 day vaction without my son because I was 7 months PG and needing to wean. When I came back I told him my tits were broke and he's slept through the night ever since then.
