Hello

my 4 month old came down with a cold about 1.5weeks ago. We were traveling (in the US) visiting family. This was his first illness. We were visiting family in Mass and were heading to NYC for the last few days of our trip when his temp spiked and he suddenly had a hard time breathing (his breathing was very laboured and his hands/feet were losing their pink color). We were literally enroute to NY and stopped at an emergency room because we were so scared. They dx him with croup, which seems to be very common in our family. They gave him some steroids : (which I never want to do again) and recommended tylenol for the fever. He did seem to get much better over the next few days. I was taking acidophilus during this as well as some ecchinacea, and my multi-vitamin, but no added Vit C.

Since we have been home (we are now back in the UK), his croupy cough seems to have calmed a bit, but now he is waking at night (just once around the same time) and having a coughing fit. His cough seems very dry, but is seems like the reason he is coughing is that there is a build-up of postnasal drip. He is fine during the day and I have been making sure we get a good amount of time outside in the cool air. But once night time hits and he is lying down he gets congested and then eventually (about 4 or 5am) wakes into a coughing fit. I usually sit him up and have been giving him saline drops because that seems to break it up and allows him to nurse back to sleep...but I don't want this to continue on forever (I know it won't but...)....WWYD?

I have called all the health food store in the area asking for SA, but no one carries it, and I can't find anyone online who carries it in the UK. Is there a temporary substitute(obviously not as good), can I take a mega dose of reg Vit C and if so, how much?

Oh, he is EBF, no-vax and I have been giving him and myself probiotics.

TIA!

I think I read on some post that you need to take vit C 20 before you nurse ds to have the most in your milk. You can "make" your own SA by adding about 1/2 the amount of baking soda to ascorbic acid. Then after it fizzes drink it. I don't like it, dh thinks it's just fine. I think these are the proportions, can't remember clearly now. There is a SA thread here somewhere where they talk about it.
I don't know if you are taking SA for your baby to get it if you would actually take it to bowel tolerance. Either way I think you would have to take lots (several grams or more).

Yes, pp is right, you can mix it yourself. See if you can find the ascorbic acid in your hfs.

If not, take about 4 times (or more) of what they recommend for the day of Vita C. Any Vita C.

Space it out so that you take it every time about 20 min. before nursing him. He'll get some through your bm. He won't get much, so make sure you take enough. You can take it all day long too if you'd rather. Anyway, enough to get you one loose bowel movement and then cut it back a bit, just enough to get you a normal stool.

You don't have to worry about overdosing on vita C. The worst that will happen is that you get diarrhea.

Do anyone UK mamas have a link to where they buy SA or ascorbic acid? We have only lived in the UK for about 8 months now and we are still don't know the best place to buy everything yet...I would like to have some on hand for any future illnesses.

Thanks!
