Help! Our NB son is six days old. He is wide chested and wide hipped, but his little thighs are very skinny. Most of my stash of covers just don't fit. The dappis leg elastic is way too big to contain anything. The wonderwraps are way too big everywhere. The other wraps I have (BSWW) I bought in the small size b/c I didn't want to waste money on the NB size (real smart, huh?), and the small size is way too big. The only cover that fits well so far is the imse vimse organic--but it is pretty expensive. I have one HH x-sm that also fits well and I could use that as a cover I guess. Any ideas for a cover to get us through this phase? We are just transitioning into the explosive breast milk poo stage and I want to have good covers in stock before DH (or I) start to question the whole cloth diaper thing. Thanks so much!

keep in mind that over the next few weeks he may also transition into the "chubby baby" instead of the "skinny newborn" phase. Can you just stick it out or is it THAT bad? I guess I would suggest waiting to see if he gets chubbier, since most babies do pretty quickly after they start b/fing a lot.

I was going to suggest Bumpy how about prowraps? they are pretty inexpensive and you could get by with a small amount and just hand wash as they get dirty. better yet, look on the trading post for some newborn covers, they will most likely be like new condition or even new as someone might not have gotten around to using them.

eta: just realized you don't have enough posts to view the trading post, you could try diaperswappers

NB prefolds are cheap, you could just buy some of them and not use covers. I'm going to assume you aren't taking dc out that much.......you have to change them a million times a day anyway.....and you would no instantly when they soil. Our infant size and fold down the rise. Both work well as pocket stuffers, then clean up towels when you are done with them. HTH

Bumkins worked real well for my skinny-legged as a newborn.

You could also try 'beefing up' the diapers with a doubler, or a few wipes laid in them which could help the diapers fit your covers a little better too. (This stage will pass faster than you think!)

I had the same problem w/ my son. What I did was I bought some cheap Gerber covers to use the first couple of weeks(they worked okay, better than the Dappi anyways), then when he had a little more weight (he only gained a little under a lb the first month) I sewed some touchtape on the tab of my Dappi wraps (not sure if you have the wraps or pull ups) so that I could overlap them. After that they fit him perfect. I know, it doesn't make any sense that making the waist smaller would make the legs fit better, but it worked. Also, if you have minimal sewing skills, maybe you could make some wool or fleece bum sweaters from old felted or fleece sweaters? If you already had the sweaters and needle and thread it wouldn't cost you anything to make them, even if you had to go the thrift shop and buy sweaters and buy needles and thread it wouldn't cost much. If you are interested, I could post some links of how to make different kinds. HTH some!
