I spent all last week dealing with thrush and my nipples are still a wreck. I've got two cracks on one of them and it just might be the worst pain I've ever felt. I've tried Lanisol and I few other things but they don't seem to be helping. I'm going to try Vit. E today, does anyone have any other suggestions?

My nipples were cracked to the point of almost bleeding for 5 days PP with DD thatnks to her powerful suck and constant state of being latched on.

The only thing that worked for me was hyrogel patches. My lactation cons. sold them to me, but she said you could aslo buy them at Babies r Us and CVS drug store and Target. you just stick them on and flatten them out over your nipple and they help you heal. She said you don't have to rinse your nipples before feeding ether, but i did because I don't really know what's in those things.
Also I saw Medela makes nipple shileds (not the kind for nursing, but a shell that keeps your bra from touching your nipple and lets air circulate) you could try alternating between those.
Hang in there. It was really hard for me, I cried everytime DD nursed for the first week it hurt so abd, but it does get better!
Also, try getting some Grapefruit Seed Extract and drinking some water or cranberry jucie with a few drops in it to keep the yeast at bay (I wouldn't put a solution on my nipples because it is highly acidic, and withthose cracks YOW!)

I guess it depends how bad the cracked skin is but I don't like using Lansinoh on cracked skin. Once the skin is cracked, it's a breeding ground for bacteria and yeasts and the Lansinoh acts as a barrier to seal them in. My dd and her high palate made a complete mess of my nipples for months - the pain was worse than labor, at least labor only lasts 24 hours or so. APNO and painkillers got me through it.

I'd go for Dr. Newman's All Purpose Nipple Ointment (APNO). You need a prescription and probably a compounding pharmacy but it's great for cracked nipples.

http://www.kellymom.com/newman/03b-t...s_breasts.html

I've had cracking with all three of mine. With ds2, the cracks on one nipple got infected. I ended up using a combination of antibiotic ointment (prescription strength - I had some onhand because my c-section incision was infected) and Lansinoh. It took a while, but it did clear up.

However, now I'm dehydrated from some stupid bug, and the nipple's cracking again. *sigh*

When I had cracks, the LC I saw had me get some polysporin ointment (it's an antibiotic ointment available over the counter) and it helped within a couple of days. My cracks were not bad and I got them taken care of early enough so that I didn't have any other problems.

I have had cracks on both nipples for ....7 months !

Dr. Newmans ointment really helps(pps), but the best thing I have found is getting a brilliabt latch-on, I can not feel any pain.

Of course the most important point is identifying the root of the problem- maybe you still have thrush (apparently, most likely cause) and could do with some gentian violet and no sweet stuff or white flour food or maybe something else.

Good luck!
