I keep hearing that a great way to get rid of cradle cap is an oil soak and then comb it out, but DS's hair was log enough to curl in his ears when he was born, so now at 4 months it's pretty long. How would you get rid of cradle cap without the oil?

My DD had horrible cradle cap at 2 y.o. and we didn't realize it until we tried to put her hair in pigtails and there it was. I didn't want to use oil either, so I searched for options, and from what I read, the best thing to do was just to massage conditioner into the scalp and pick off the skin, bit by bit. That's what I did, a little bit every night while DD was in the tub. It hasn't come back. HTH.

omg my daughter had the worst cradle cap ever! seriously, her head was disgusting. The OCD in me just couldn't deal with it. I finally got her baby comb and just scratched the hell out of her head. It didn't hurt her, mind you, in fact she seemed relieved. Whenever I scratched her head with my fingers she seemed happier for it so I just used the comb.

Originally, I did the soap thing and the body lotion deal, but with her hair, it just wouldn't work. But after scraping it all off with the baby comb, it never came back ... although my futon was COVERED with all that gross dead skin. Ew. Even after washing the cover I couldn't sit there for a week. *shudder*

i had the same thing and i tried the olive oil once and then didnt want my lo to look like a grease head! so now, after his bath at night i comb through "against the grain" if you will. i only wash his hair about 2x a week, so the other nights i just get the top wet
he's 10.5 months now and we're still pikcin' away!

Insofar as I can't see it (and if you look at my daughter it's pretty clear that mostly I can't see it without seriously searching
), I just leave it alone. Once it started creeping down into her hairline where it was visible, and that time I massaged a little lotion into it and scraped at it gently with my fingernails. The lotion just soaked right into her hair like a leave-in conditioner, too ... it didn't really need to be washed out at all like plain oil would.

mine still has it too which i recently discovered when trying to determine if DD's hair was long enough for pigtails... it had been an out of sight out of mind kind of thing and i was disgusted to be reminded that it never had gone away in the first place!

after her bath i've been using a calendula cream and rubbing it into scalp as best as possible, then comb hair out. we do baths only 3x/week before bedtime so i needed something that was more water-based and wouldn't leave oils stains on her sheets. yes her hair looks a bit greasy but come morning, she's got her own version of dippety do hair that i can easily shape to keep out of her eyes.
