Suggestions? I don't have a lot of money, but i am NOT buying another wal-mart serger. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/rant.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="rant">: It wouldn't even sew through 4 layers! (3 layers hemp and 1 layer fleece) is that too much to ask of a serger? I need one that is going to work for sewing diapers. I need it to sew through several layers. Help!

3 layers hemp and 1 layer fleece is all I can ask of mine, and it's not the wal-mart special. Hem is a really tough fabric on machines, or so it seems to me. That said...have you tried your local sew and vac? They should have used machines in the same price range. They're very informed on what works well and what doesn't since their job is to fix broken machines. Take some scraps with you and tell them you need a machine that can sew "this."

I guess it depends on if its hemp fleece or jersey. One thing that helped me was to use a stretch needle for my fleeces. It made a huge difference.

Most sergers have trouble with more than 3 layers of Hemp fleece or Hemp terry. I'd suggest taking the fabrics you plan to serge with you when trying out the machines <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngbiggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="orange big grin">

Hemp is just a tough fabric. I have a hard time cutting it out one layer at a time - I can only imagine what stress 3 layers puts on my machine.

I have a walmart machine (Brother) and mine sews through 4 layers of hemp fleece (which is THICK). Sorry you've had trouble... <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad">
