I am having a homebirth with an amazing LM that is just as hands off as you can get. I love her very much... I was considering a UC... until I met her. I truly feel that I would want this woman at my birth regardless of her knowledge... she has a great spirit and I love her knowledge base.

So that said, I was asked by her to have a couple labs done. I was diagnosed with GD last time, and because she is a LM and not a CNM she is a little more "under the microscope" here in town.

I agreed because I would also love to debunk the "gd" diagnosis once and for all. I decided that I would take the test, but only with the alternative meal and not the gluco-soda crap they give you.

I had to go to a birth center with CNMs to have the labs done so that my insurance would cover it..... when I got there this is how that conversation went:

mw- "you will need to take the 1 hour Glucose Tolerance"

me- "thats fine~ I want the alternative meal test though"

mw- "I dont know what you mean by that"

I explain what it is.

mw- "well, Ive never heard of such a thing. "

me- "well, I learned about it in nursing school almost 6 years ago, so I find it shocking that you have never heard of it"

mw-"I doubt very highly you will find anyone in town who does that. This is how we do things here, if you do not take this test, we may have to risk you out to a high risk OB and you will have to birth in a hospital"

me- "no, that is not what will happen, what will happen is that I will birth at home with or without a midwife. You do not get to tell me what will happen. I know my options."

mw (who at this point was literally red in the face withanger- "you need to drink this and take this test or we are at a standstill with your care"

me- "I will not drink that soda in any circumstance- no matter WHAT you say to me, is that clear?"

the midwife goes on to say that we can finish with the other labs and adds, "you can go ahead and call around to other labs in town and try and find your alternative test... let me know how that goes".

We go through the exam, she measures me... talks with me about other things... asks what kind of nurse I was- I say "cardiac ICU" she says, "oh, thats quite a difficult field".....:......then she apologizes to me for the "tension".

I explain that I expected to have to argue something, I am not mainstream and I do not agree with about 95% of what the medical field does... and I just told her that I even know OBs that freely admit to false positives with the gluco-soda... especially if your body is not accustomed to processing large quantities of simple sugars.

she says- "thats a nice theory- it was nice meeting you... let me know if you find a lab.... and remember that it has to be equivalent to 50g!" and she leaves the room.

SO I am sitting there having my labs drawn, and she walks in with a piece of paper and says, "we offer the alternative test here. I didnt know that- here is the instructions".

and she walks out.

NOW- how scary is THAT??????

She said, multiple times- you wont be able to find anyone in town that does that.

THEY do THAT!

Im telling you, it is becoming more and more obvious to me that my traumatic birth of dd could have been avoided if I had grown a backbone much sooner. (or found MDC sooner)

The thing that tripped me out- was I full on expected to argue not doing an U/S.... never the alternative glucose test. :

Isn't it scary just how "normal" all the medical tests and procedures have become? It even seeps into the thinking of those who seek to do better (like most midwives). That kind of thinking makes me nuts - the "this is how we do it because this is how we do it." A lot of people never give any thought to why things are done, much less less seek alternatives. I would be wary of her.

: What a weird conversation. Glad you have the backbone to stand up for yourself with stuff like this. Sounds like you're educating the MW-- other women are sure to benefit from your strength

Wow! You go girl! I am way wimpier than you are. I admire that.

Okay, so as a side note. I'm curious why people don't want to drink the soda? I only ask because I'm delivering at the hospital and I will be having the GD test at the regular time. I'd like to be informed of why this is maybe not the best route?

Thanks!!

My birth center let me do the test with not-from-concentrate orange juice and they are not at all crunchy or alternative.

Can you find studies to back up the alternative gd tests and show them to her?

Maybe your UC decision was just made for you?

I always find it weird when I hear stories about about midwives who are like that. Not so much CNM because they are more a part of the medical system, but homebirth midwives always surprise me when they get very medical.

Good for you for standing up for yourself!

I am in no way birthing with this clinic... this was just a visit to get labs from a birth center that is run by CNMs so that my insurance would cover it to save me from paying a couple hundred for lab values.

I am birthing at home with a LM that is completely separate form the midwife I saw. There was never any intention to have any of these midwives attend.

If this was my option?

Id be running full speed as far away as I could!

I edited my first post to clarify that this was not my LM saying this. It was the CNM at the birth center where I had to go to get my labs- who reacted like this.

Oh! Well, that makes more sense. Still unsettling, but less of a surprise that the CNM would be so medical about it (though odd that she was so uninformed about her own center's practices!).

OH! I totally thought your LM was turning on you. Now it makes a lot more sense. I guess I just missed that little bit of info when I originally read your post, sorry .

I don't any good links regarding the alternative test. We were taught the alternatives in nursing school which included the jelly bean test, and the meal.

My LM also talked to me about it. The birth center sheet that the CNM handed me at the end has three different meal options.

I can post it later... its in my car .

Here is another thread where it was discussed briefly. The sample meal is similar to what I was given... i think.:

http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=789723

Hope that helps.

I still cant believe that this midwife wasn't aware of her own birth center's options. very interesting. :

I just cringe to think of the women that would have believed her and done the glucola to avoid being "risked out".... very sad. I honestly hadn't expected scare tactics from a midwife at a well known birth center. :
