Okay ladies, critique this new-to-cloth-diapering mom's idea of a good stash...

My ds is 4 mo's old

6 Medium Bummis
3 dozen Premium CPF

all from niki's cloth diapers

Brings my grand total to $123 since Niki offers free shipping.

I'm going to hold off on the AIO because for the Bumkins the size range is 13-18lbs and my DS is just over 16 so we wouldn't just that much wear out of it (I figure he's been gaining about 1 oz a day, or about 2 lbs a month (give or take a few ounces).

Any tips? Good stash for a starter?? THANKS!

Are you going to get a snappi/pins too? You may need to use something to secure them if he still has those breastmilk poos. Besides that, looks real good, very similar to what I started out with. I have ordered from Nicki's too, I was very happy with the service. Don;t forget you need to prep your prefolds when you get them. Good luck!

Looks good!

Personally I needed more than 6 covers, but I don't know if that is the norm.

Also what are you going to use for wipes?

Immediate concerns would be:
Snappi's or pins?
Wipes?
Something to use as a diaper pail?

And once you kinda figure out what you're doing and what may/may not work:
Any wool to use overnight if you have a supersoaker?
A few extra covers?
Or doublers to use overnight?
Wet bag for on the go?

I know some moms don't mind bummis AIOs, but from what i've gleened they tend to be whispery/rustly and don't hold up well to wear and tear ('course, not as huge of a issue for the small sizes) and they arn't super absorbant either.

AIOs I like bum-wear and verybaby
but i use pockets as the main part of my stash. just as easy to use as a AIO and you can use your prefolds to stuff them!
I actually prefer pockets to AIO diapers because they almost always have a layin/snapin/foldin soaker, and pockets don't.

I picked out bummis too for my wishlist when I was first pregnant, but i'm glad I went the other route

That sounds fabulous! In fact, it's my dream daytime stash right now, but DH is very afraid of pfs.
He actually used a snappi the other day! Here are my suggestions:

Immediate additions:
pins or snappis
remnant fleece for cheap, cut into liners (you don't have to hem or serge them)
diaper pail/wet bag (we use a garbage can w/a lid for home & a Bummis tote for away)
a big pack of washcloths from a discount store for wipes (they work fabulously)

My ideal additions:
procion dyes so you can dye & tie dye your pfs (just for fun
)
a couple wool covers or soakers for night time (you can double diaper if you need more absorbancy)

Have fun!!

Awww, you're taking me back....

When we started cloth diapering our first son (he was 2 mos. old at the time) we started with Bummis and CPF's too!

We used that exclusively for about 6 months and then started branching out and trying new things...now it's not just diapering but a fun hobby...oh yeah, and a home-based business for me too! :LOL

Have fun!

CPFs are great we used CPFs exclusively on my first until Ally was about 6 months old we used Prowraps as covers. We then decided that we wanted fitteds and Fuzzi Bunz.

Your choice is a sound one, and your tastes will most likely change over time as well.

Thank-you!! I added 2 Snappi's and 6 soakers to the list. For wipes I'm going to use up my stash of sposies (he needed Pampers Sensitive, hard to find in my area so I buy in bulk when I do find them...have ~700+ left
) then I have a ton of wash cloths from baby showers soo I'll make my owm with plain ol' water.

Q- How long should the fleece liners be? I have gobs of fleece from when I made ponchos to hide under during my early NIP days.

I made mine too small for my liking--I would go about 4" by 10" or so? I'm not sure--get someone else's opinion before cutting for sure!

And as for the soakers, we only used 2-3 in each size, especially when we stopped changing overnight (after the poo at every feeding stage, LOL). But again, I'm pretty new to this too, so wait for another mama's input.

Do you mean 6 wool soakers or 6 doubler/soakers? I *think* you mean the doubler (additional in-diaper absorbency), but am not positive. If so, 6 is a good start.

Fleece liners... Make sure it's just microfleece and not windpro or heavyweight fleece. Windpro repels liquid, which is not good for inside a diaper. Check to see what kind it is first. But if you make the liners about the same size as inserts/doubler (like joey bunz) you should be good to go.

When using CPF be sure to look up the Jelly Roll to hold those poos in, the binkini twist is nice for walkers, but doesn't hold runnies in (TMI
).
I like wool for night especially, it is absorbant as well as breathable. I use Aristocrats mostly b/c they are very utilitarian, functional and durable.
I use grocery store plastic bags for my diaper pail, especially if I'm being lazy and haven't gotten around to bringing the pail back upstairs. I have one for poos and one for wets.
I started off still using store bought wipes and then started using baby wash clothes I had oodles of. I still use store wipes off and on, I keep the flushable kind for wiping poos and then flush it all away.
Tip -- BF poos look orangy yellow on CPF, the only thing I've ever used to take that out has been line drying in the sun. Thank goodness warm weather is finally here!

Yeah, the doubler soaker things...Nicki sells them in a 6 pack, better deal so...

I'm really looking foward to getting my first stash bought, then I can add fun stuff on as I go. I was really surprised by DH's reaction when I broached the whole CD plan, he was skeptical at first, but when I showed him the dollars and cents of it, he thinks it's such a good idea, and is even willing to learn how to do it! YEA!!
