My Japanese crochet book came! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngbiggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="orange big grin"> It does seem fairly straightforward, with the exception of knowing which yarn weights/hooks to use. Most of it appears to be WW projects, so can go with that and use an appropriate hook. Maybe experiment a little.<br><br>
The charts are great, but I really need a key (the chart key in the book is also in Japanese). I found a couple tutorials but they weren't helpful in this respect.

If I can get my desktop up and running tonight, I have some chart keys that may help, otherwise, can you scan a picture of the key?

I put a couple scans in my blog. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"><br><br>
The crochet in the round patterns are <i>almost</i> making sense ... there's a really cute tissue holder pattern which I would love to make my first project (it looks simpler than the crocheted cake tea cosy <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">) but that pattern is actually confusing me more. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/headscratch.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="headscratch"> There seem to be a lot of blank places in the chart for that one ...<br><br>
Maybe if I find some crochet charts in english I can compare them and make sense of it all? I have no qualms with making big black notes on my book to make it make sense. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">

It specifies Japanese, too.

Bridgette,<br>
Here's another link to <a href="http://mylittlemochi.typepad.com/my_little_mochi/files/japanese_pattern_help.pdf" target="_blank">my little mochi's</a> blog where she's created a pdf version of a word table of japanese words and their english translations, it might help a bit. There's something else I'm looking for for you, I'll try to remember to get it tonight.

It scares me too! When I first opened the envelope it came in, I was soooo disappointed because I thought I'd just <i>have</i> to trade it for something else with some crafter out there, I didn't get it at all. I spent some time really studying the patterns and now it makes sense. It was just a matter of transitioning from thinking of crochet in linear terms to visual ones.<br><br>
And yes - it is the cake book that I got. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"> I think I've figured-out the chocolate cake pocket tissue holder pattern ... that's what I've been working on. I'll definitely post a pic, since it's flat enough to fit in my scanner. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"><br><br>
The only thing that bugs me is I'm not sure what size hook or which weight of yarn. For most of these I don't think it matters much, and they use worsted weight anyhow.
