Crocheted shorts

I want to crochet some soaker shorts. I'm a beginner, and am kind of winging it right now. The one I've started, I'm crocheting the waistband and will stitch the ends of that together, and then crochet the body of it "in the round." Then... I'll figure something out for the legs. I'm not crazy about using patterns, but I should probably give them more of a try. Would any pattern for shorts work as soaker shorts? Would they probably need to have a higher waist than regular shorts? I haven't found a crochet pattern for soaker shorts online.
