So, tonight I set up the crock pot with some oatmeal cinnamon breakfast cereal and I'm totally excited to have warm brekkie all ready tomorrow.

Does anyone have any experience with overnight cereal cooking? And any good recipes???

TIA

I've done steel cut oats in the CP overnight, but that seems to be too long to cook them, and they get overcooked on the edges. I looove baked oatmeal, which sits in the fridge overnight, and you bake it in the morning.

How did your recipe turn out?

I cook my steel cut oats overnight in the crockpot like this. The edges are never overcooked, plus I think it's easier to clean, too!

Thank you for reporting! I'll have to try this tonight.

growing up, my adopted grandmother always did: 1 c. rinsed oat groats, 5 c. water, 1 apple chopped up. cooked in the crockpot on low all night. really really good. and not too cooked on edges. but i think that would depend on your crockpot--my crockpot does fine with this recipe, but my mom's---yikes! her low is hotter than my high, it seems. recipe for disaster!

Mine didn't turn out so great. It was a little runny and definitely overcooked around the edges. I used steel cut oats and barley. Sooo I'm gonna try that amazing looking crock pot recipe that MarchMummy linked us to!

I love hijacked threads, expecially when I leave them to die for a few days.....

Just wanted to say that I tried this last night and we ate it this morning. SOOOO good! My kids love oatmeal and I was so tired of buying those envelopes with who knows what in them. I bought some steelcut oats yesterday and baked it "bain-marie" style in the crockpot, super easy clean up and they were really good! We sweetened them with a little brown sugar and the kids devoured it. Spent way less money feeding 6 of us then buying the microwave stuff.

I do this too! I keep it plain and add brown sugar and raisins in the morning. Nothing beats a belly full of warm good oatmeal on a cold winter day. Plus it is super cheap to boot!

I don't see why a jar wouldn't work. I was thinking the same thing. I have 2 crock-pots. One is my mom's old one and one is a new one. Both of them burned the oatmeal around the edges, so I can't wait to try this method. I'll have to wait till tomorrow night though, I'm out of milk and I don't have enough oats left. I use mine to make oatmeal molassas bread, so I go through it pretty quickly.

I used a pyrex glass measuring cup (1 litre size ) and it worked great. The bottom was a bit brown but nothing serious . . if you use your mason jar maybe put a small plate underneath the jar to keep it from getting too cooked on the bottom. Tell us how it works.
