2 days ago, I couldn't keep my eyes open (it was almost comical) and yesterday woke up with THE biggest sugar craving ever - had a nectarine and a scone and it didn't even touch it, but 2 pieces of bread with honey mmmmmm. Also had a almost total decrease in BH for the 2 days before yesterday. Anyhoo, started having very slightly tinged pink discharge yesterday (no internal exams or sex) and BH came back with a vengeance and today had lots more bloody show after BH all night along with clearing out of the system.

At this point, I figured, ok SOMEthing better be happening! So I checked and I'm waaaay more effaced - I was 70% on Thursday when the doctor checked, and now I'm 100% (I think, there is no cervix protruding like there was before, just the dilation). Yay!

Anyhoo, pray that things really get started soon - I would love to have this little one in June and not July!

Updated - painfully contracted through part of last night and then had a really long dreamless sleep which I was thankful for. Woke up this morning to very few BH and just feeling pretty frustrated. This is the 5th bout of intense prodromal labor where I thought it *could* be it and now I'm just annoyed. I honestly think I'll probably have this baby in my jeans or in the toilet because I won't believe that real labor is happening. I do think I may have dilated a bit more though, but still less than a 6 - maybe a 5.5.

As to checking the cervix, I don't have a link - I used to check it when I was charting before pg, so I kind of knew what to feel for already. I've checked it off and on for a while so I could sense the changes.

I always wonder how you check yourself as well... do you have a link for what to feel for?

I wondered that too, I've been googling but apparently not the right phrase 'cause I can't find anything, even on the uc sites I've visited.

The Taking Charge of Your Fertility book has the best, IMO, explanation on how to find your cervix and what it feels like when it's open... It doesn't give you any info really on how many cm dialated you are though. I think the rule is something like 1 finger easily slid in is 1 cm, etc.

Yeah - my cervix right now feels like lips - softish and floppy if you will. Well, not so much anymore , it just feels like a hole because I think I am 90-100% effaced at this point. As to dilation, I measured my fingers (I have widish fingers) and so 3 fingers in is exactly 5cm on me. Doctors usually use 1 finger, and then the index and next finger for figuring dilation after that and guesstimate how far apart the fingers can go, so 1 finger to the baby's head (or butt) is 1ish cm, 2 fingers is 2ish (unless you have bigger fingers, I err on the small side of cm measuring because of this and because finger size varies). 2 a fingerswidth apart is 3cm and so on. It is way easier to just measure your fingers and do it that way though, as your fingers may be smaller or bigger. Also dilation is measured by how many fingers you can fit all the way to the baby's head or butt.

As to effacement - your cervix starts out at roughly 4cm long, or your index finger to the 2nd knuckle. If you can fit your index in all the way and you are to the first knuckle, then you are roughly 50% effaced. If you cannot feel any lip of cervix at all, but just a hole, you are all the way effaced.

Also, how anterior or posterior your cervix is can be a sign too. The cervix gets VERY posterior during pregnancy and starts to come down during labor to a more anterior position. If you really have to reach and/or can't find your cervix at all, you are more than likely pretty posterior. The easier it is to find, the more anterior it is.

Before I check, I wash my hands, then use Purell, and then some lube. Your cervix will be on the top of your vagina, up towards the back of the baby's head. Sometimes the baby will swivel or move when he/she feels you touching his head through the vaginal wall - it freaked me out a bit the first time I felt that, so just wanted to warn you! I am horrible about figuring out baby's station though, but you can tell if the baby has moved up or down if you check more than once.

Hope that helps and sorry it's a bit disjointed!
