I'm guessing this is the correct forum since this is bf related. I'm 6mos pregnant right now and had been bf DD until Christmas day last year (she was almost 26mos then). I had been weaning her gradually until then ever since we got pregnant again since my milk-supply was not as high as it was anyways (had a miscarriage last summer). Anyways, my question is, I know that there is no nipple preparation necessary, however, my nipples were looking crusty and developing this hard layer of ??? on them. I have been scrubbing them gently with a washcloth this past week and so far most of it is off. I'm hoping that once I get this layer off I won't have to scrub anymore and that I still have 3 mos of "normal" pregnancy nipple development and such so that when this baby comes, it won't be as if I have been scrubbing all the time. I don't remember my nipples looking like this when I was pregnant with DD. Hope I didn't really ruin things for myself! Anybody have any comments or similar experiences to share? TIA!

What is the crustiness like? Could it be colostrum that's leaking and then hardened? That stuff is pretty sticky.

I would wash with warm water and a very mild soap (or even something like olive oil) but not scrub with a washcloth...you really don't want any breaks in the skin that might come with too much scrubbing!

Hope you get crust-free nipples back soon!

I got some degree of crustiness on mime, too, while pregnant. Funny, I had forgotten all about it til I read your post! I didn't use soap on them or try to get the crustiness off, but I did use one of the pregnant belly oils all over my torso, including my breasts. It didn't remove the crunchiness, but I really wanted not to disturb my breasts and make them hurt.

I was thinking that it was colostrum or something like that, but I never had any sensation of leaking, so I wasn't sure. My breasts do fill full, but I think that's just d/t pregnancy and not "milk" per se. Anyways, like I said, they're crust-free now. Hope they stay that way without anymore scrubbing. I think I'll try the olive oil bit if it comes back. Thanks!
