I don't know if there's a benefit, but it just happens sometimes. I mean if nothing you're trying is working, what else can you do but wait it out for a while? You can't force them to stop crying.
I agree with the others- if you've done everything, and the baby is still crying, then just hold your baby and let him/her cry. Better yet, cry WITH the baby- you probably need it after caring for an inconsolable baby!!
It's possible that some babies need to cry to deal with some kind of past trauma, but not all babies need to do this.

Do I think it is okay to let my baby/child cry in arms if I"ve done everything to console them? Yes, but I will still be consoling them while they cry in my arms. Sometimes DS has been fed and won't feed anymore, has a dry diaper, is in proper temperature clothing, but still cries so he lays with me or in my arms and whimpers while I sing to him.
