Yesterday I started getting mastitis again, this is the 4th time in a year. The last 3 times I just nursed and rested and it eventually went away. But I'm not too happy that it keeps coming back just a couple months later.

I'm just wondering whether I should go ahead and get antibiotics this time. Would taking antibiotics make it less likely that I would get mastitis again a few months from now?

I don't know that it will make you less likely to get it. I got it once when DS was 3 weeks old and again when he was 4 months old. Each time I nursed him on that side but I got so sick that I had to get antibiotics. If you are running a fever and feel like you have the flu you may want to try them. I know people around here don't care much for them but they aren't always evil. Good Luck. I know mastitis is NOOOO fun.:

Some women are just prone to mastitis. There are some things you can do to prevent it.

Make sure that your breasts aren't being physically restricted. For some women it means never wearing underwires or bras that are tight in any place. For others sleeping on their stomachs seem to bring it on.

Just being stressed and tired and having a weakened immune system can cause it. Anemia seems to contribute. Staying rested is one of the best ways to prevent mastitis.

Letting the baby finish one side completely before switching can help.

Lowering saturated fats and taking a lecithin supplement can help.

Sometimes it does take a course of antibiotics to completely clear up a case of mastitis, but if the recurring bouts are much longer then a month apart then it probably is clearing up and is just happening again.

I had mastitis a few weeks ago and used antibiotics. From what I can recall, both the Dr. Sears book and Kellymom recommended seeing your dr. if you had flu-like symptoms and if the redness was getting worse. I had both, so I went. They did a good job of clearing the infection up quickly. I think the suggestions Mallory suggested are very helpful.

I've had really good luck with the homeopathic Phytolacca Decandra. I get infections every couple of months, and if I take this at the first sign, it clears up within 12 hours, instead of getting to the omygodimgoingtodie feeling. I started taking this when I had an infection and was BFing and pregnant and even got to the stage of going to get an Rx for antibiotics, and then worrying that I would hurt one of the babies. Even though that infection had gone on for a couple of days, the homeopathic cleared it right up.

I got masititis 3x w/ my son and I did antibiotics all 3. My fever was at like 104 and I have never felt so bad in all my life. Weird thing though, when I began to take acidophilus everyday (2 billion live) I have not had a recurrence in about 8 mos. And I had 3 bouts in about 6 mos. prior. I began taking alot of other supplements as well, like C, E, A, selenium so maybe they all helped but I really wonder if the probiotics haven't helped me ward off that particular strain. Do you do probiotics regularly? Might give a daily a try. But if it gets bad I would say antibiotic if nothing but so you can function.
