A lot DH's family (not including DH) have bad scoliosis that causes them to have a hump in their back. 5 week old DD's back looks really curved. i can't tell if it is just from being curled up in my belly for so long or what. Anyone know when their back should look "straight" It is so hard to tell if her spine is straight or not.

It depends on how bad the scolosis is (if she has it) I have scolosis (40% curve last time checked which was several years ago) Anyways, I was dx with it when I was just a few months old so I have always known that I had it. I would ask her doctor if they can do a check this early just to make sure. I have my doctor check the twins everytime we have an appt, so far so good!

There are two types of scoliosis:

Genetic - born with the genetic marker that predisposes a person to scoliosis.
Injury related - caused by an injury

Under those are sub-types of scoliosis (I don't remember all of them). I have scoliosis was diagnosed in adulthood (rare to be diagnosed as an adult, most diagnosis are in juvenile patients).

Scoliosis affects more women than men and can get worse after each pregnancy in an adult female patient by 5 to 15 % in curvature of the spine.

Have the ped doc reccomend you to a specialist and have her looked at now rather than later.

Scoliosis not only affects the spinal cord but the symptoms can affect all of the joints as well (if the spine is out of "whack" so to speak it throws off all the other joints as well).

Some mornings I wake up crawling out of bed or barely able to crawl out of bed.

There are two ways to deal with this disease - pain management or surgery. I prefer pain management myself (I can't afford the 6 month recovery time as I have 5 young children to take care of).
