Wasn't sure if I should post this here or in Breastfeeding, but here goes.

My son is 10 months and I have only had one period since he's been born. We are still BFing. My period was 46 days ago. Before getting pregnant I had simple 28-day cycles. So I took a pg test today and it was negative. I wonder if it's common for cycles to be messed up while BFing? Even if I already had one period?

We aren't necessarily "trying" right now, but I think when I told DH I took a test and it was negative, he was a little disappointed. We want to have another child soon, so I guess now I will be waiting for my cycle to return...?

My cycles returned regularly when my DS was 12mos old, except now they are a lot longer than before. I used to have 29-30 day cycles but for the past 6 mos they have been anywhere from 32-42 days long. I do notice that when I nurse him less they are shorter. For instance...I was at girlfriends delivery 3 weeks ago and my DS went 2 days without nursing..well low and behold I get my AF right on time 5 days later. When he was sick I got a 45 day cycle
so it is definitely related to how much he nurses. Anyway, I HTH!
We are in the process of trying for #2 right now but it's difficult to know when I O because my cycles are so wacky
Amanda - It's VERY common for cycles to be messed up while BFing. In many cases, it doesn't return until Bfing ceases completely, or at a minimum is reduced. My son is 14 mos and still going strong BFing, and thus, I have yet to get AF. Not really expecting it any time soon either. I know a lot of women who do get AF while nursing (like yourself) will find their cycles messed up (from what they consider "normal") for months - and some will regulate pretty quickly. I think the most common thing I've noticed is that there's no real commonality - everyone is just SOOO different! It's different for everyone. But, take comfort in that what you're going through is not abnormal.

I am still nursing my 13-month old and I got my first period on July 1st. I have not had one since, and am not pregnant (yet!) It is crazy.

With all four of our kids, I breastfed/am breastfeeding until well past two, and even until four and five. In any case, my cycles never returned until 21 or 22 months. Ever. My fourth is now 22 months, and I STILL do not have my cycles. I wouldn't care, except I want one more. So it's driving me crazy. But anyway, your experience is totally normal. Enjoy it while it lasts.
