Hi, single dad here. in the middle of a messy divorce and am too proud at the moment to go and grovel to the mother of my twins and ask her for help. so, can you help me with my dilemma?

one of my twins is 15 months old and he is wetting his diaper so badly at night that it leaks through his pjs and gets all over the sheets. of course i change him and his clothes but why does this happen? his mother isn't here to nurse him at night, and i don't get him drinks after 7 so why is this happening at this age? i am using disposables at night -- the expensive ones. i use cloth during hte day.

can you please help me? I only have the twins on the weekends, so i don't know how often this happens. it has happened to me 5 times in a row now.

thanks.

Sam,
As they get older they start to hold the pee more instead of letting out little bits throughout the day. Possibly he holds it until he is asleep? I found that the diaper really depends on the shape of the baby. Marah Jade always leaked in Pampers because she is "hippy" and the dipes were too narrow. Huggies fit her the best. Now she uses pull ups and they have a night version that works really well.

I find that cheap store brand diapers actually absorb better for us than the expensive stuff. Also, some stores sell dispoisable "doublers" which are an insert you put inside the regular diaper to absorb extra pee. We used them for a long time and they worked really well! (We bought one size bigger in the regular diapers so that the doubler would fit inside.) Finally, sometimes boys leak out if their little parts aren't pointed right down the middle of the diaper. Make sure he's pointed south, not north.

We used to use the Huggies Overnights and they worked pretty well. But I have to say that a fuzzi bunz with 2 microfiber inserts and a thin hemp insert in between works even better! What kind of cloth dipes do you use? Have you tried them at night? If you are using fitteds or CPFs I think a really good wool cover might make all the difference for night time.

We used to deal with leaky diapers at night a lot. The Huggies Overnites are definitely a lifesafer! But even those would sometimes leak on the nights that ds nursed more than usual. One thing that helped us too is to make sure we put them on right, making sure the little "walls" at the side of the diaper weren't stuck down and were nice and snug without gaps at the crotch.

Weird thought, but do you put the diapers on LOOSELY? sometimes this isn't a problem for a child but others pee differently and it can leak right through..

With my son i had to make sure his diapers were SNUG SNUG SNUG before bed, or he'd "pee right through them"... turns out the pee was actually coming out the sides .. not through the diaper... and it would only happen when the diaper wasn't SNUG..

I also noticed that men tend not to tighten diapers as snug as mothers... i don't know if they feel its going to hurt them or what the deal is.. but NONE of the men i had change my sons diaper , actually pulled the straps snug before attaching them to the diaper...

This included : my dad.. my brother... my s/o and my sons bio dad.

Don't want to generalize, but I think you might be right. Now, the OP sounds like he's a pretty "with it" dad, so I don't know if this is his problem. But personally, my husband never put the diapers on as snugly as I did. I had to tell him to think of the diaper as a specially engineered product to keep the waste in, and then check and make sure everything was working and fitted tight enough to do the job, and the flanges were flared around the legs. When you think of the diaper more as an engineered product with a purpose, rather than something akin to a loose piece of clothing that covers a child's butt-- you realize you've got to check that you've done your diapering job properly. The job isn't done just cause you slapped the thing on.

Oh...and I used cheap diapers on my skinny kid. I hear Huggies are great for some kids, but they didn't fit on my dd as well. Good luck, OP!

i absolutely LOVED walmarts noname brand diapers with the garfield print on them... they have stretchy sides and are VERY absorbent... they have a wetness indicator and the velcro is nice and strong...They are almost identical to Huggies, but quite a significant amount less in the price category... I swore by these until my son started pull ups.

now that i think of it.. i did have that problem a couple times.. but you can also do the tabs up and pull them up like CRUISERS too... even though it doesn't show that on the bag, you actually can...
i found it only ripped on the tabs when he was fussing around and didn't want to lay down

My thought too. Also, be sure to put it on snuggly.

FYI - for all my kids I have used the BJ Wholesale store brand of diaper, comes in all sizes.
