X-posted in Breastfeeding

I just starting cutting dairy out of my diet. My 5-week old twins only poop every 4-5 days and are very gassy. They seem uncomfortable, so I want to do something to help them out. There doesn't seem to be any other reaction, no skin issues, no diaper rash, no excessive spit-up. So my questions are:

1) How strict do I need to be avoiding dairy? At this point I am trying to avoid everything. I found that my bread has trace amounts of dried milk in it, so I will find a new brand of bread. Will cutting way back on dairy do any good, or does it have to be all the way?

2) Does this mean they will have dairy sensitivities when they get older?

FTR, they did get some formula in the hospital, maybe 8-10 ounces each spread over 3 days. They were pooping several times a day at the hospital, but 2-3 days after we got home one of them stopped and then a couple of days later the other one stopped. We are not supplementing now.

They appear to be gaining weight fine. Other than them being uncomfortable, is there anything else to be concerned about?

Thanks!

Hi Mama,

Dairy allergies often go away in a few years. My ds had horrible eczema from dairy/eggs as a babe and while the egg (and numerous other things) still causes the problem, he can eat dairy fine.

I think it depends on the babe how restrictive you have to be. It does take quite a while (a month?) for the protein from the dairy to leave your milk so you might not see results for a while.

Good luck!

You need to be very strict, give it at least a month or so. Yes, it can go away. However, unfortunately a lot of times symptoms just change and it gets missed that intolerances are still there.
