what are you feelings on consuming milk and the treatment of the the animals?

Recently, I visited a goat farm and planned to buy some raw goats milk but after having the kids (who were seperated from mama completely after day 3) suck on my fingers and the farmer told me all about how he bottle feeds them powdered milk and burns off their horns because he doesnt like them, ect... I didnt feel I wanted to buy the milk to put it mildly, I actually was quite upset about this and I felt there could be a kinder way to dairy farm.

This led me to contact many dairies, especially the local ones and I did find a local woman who I can get raw goats milk from who keeps the mamas and kids together at night...I feel much better about that.

I did get varied replies from the dairies I contacted and I felt better that there were people out there using a kinder approach because I do want to continue having dairy in our diets but also to feel good about where it comes from.

anyone care to share any thoughts on this?

We get our milk through the same company that runs our organic veggie box delivery. They send out letters periodically to invite visitors to their dairy farm and last spring about this time we got a letter saying "Now that it's not so cold out, the cows go outside more, so you may notice the milk is a little more yellow than usual." I feel okay about it.

Less so when I run out of that milk and buy from the supermarket. But we try.

I'm concerned about this too. I contacted organic valley about it, and their response is here: Ethical dairy

I haven't found any "ethical" dairy sources yet. I'm still looking. I want to try using almond milk products too.
Its hard to buy milk knowing what goes into the production

I get my milk through a goat share and she is wonderful w/the goats and the babies suckle off the mom and are always kept together. Everything is clean and the milk is tested monthly so I don't worry too much. I make my yogurt, sour cream, etc from the same raw milk I recieve.
