Does anyone have suggestions for gyms and dance classes? I'm having a hard time finding any dance classes for a soon to be 3 year old... gymnastic classes that are actually instructive have been hard to find as well.

TIA!

We just started classes at the Carolina sportart in Chapel Hill. My ds is having a blast. His class is more a free for all than instructional but they offer instructional classes as well.

sheena, where are you? for dance i recommend dancentre tucked away behind the american legion off legion rd in chapel hill (near durham). they start at 3, but make exceptions for almost 3s. www.dancentre.net . i highly recommend melody on wednesday afternoons at 2:10 (i think), but if that time doesn't work for you they also have classes on tuesday at 1:30 and saturday at 10. classes are 45 minutes long. dd1 has been going since she was 3.5. dd2 started this year, but has since decided to take a break. you pay by the month so you can pick up or drop at any time. they have a really cute recital at the end of the year, too.

mommyoftwo, do you remember where fabia teaches in durham?

there's always Little Gym in durham, too...

We LOVED Fabia when DS took classes there. He was the only boy, LOL. I could have stood without the moms discussing how "fat" their 3 year olds looked. The studio is Encore.

Oh, the Beana is fine. Just a bump. The arnica helped, but she's going to have a goose egg. She napped for a good long while.

are you talking $40 about dancentre? it's about $40/45 per month if you do one class per week. i don't think they explain the rates very well. when i was checking it out 2 years ago for dd1 it was the most reasonable place i found in town, although they were all about the same. i think dancentre was maybe $5 cheaper than the other places i checked out, but their rates did go up slightly this year so they're probably all about the same now. looking at their table (http://www.dancentre.net/html/fee_information.php) what they're saying is if you take 1 class per week your fee is $45 per class per month, so $45 x 1 = $45 for a month. if you take 6 classes a week (dedicated student!) it's $35 per class per month so $35 x 6 = $210 per month. make sense? i think it's a great place and a good deal.

ETA, V, did your little one have a tumble? sorry. hope she's feeling better.

OK. From the site I thought it was saying $40 a class! $40-$60 a month is what I'm used to. Dh thinks we should only do gymnastics or dance but not both so I'm going to check out Bull City Gymnastics and Acrosport this week.

well, dancentre will let you try out a class for free if you want. just give them a call. it's on the durham side of chapel hill and i know several moms and kids who come from durham. i've never heard any mom (or dad) talk about their child's weight like supervee was talking about -- yeeeecchhh. there are a few boys in classes, but it's mostly girls. my dd1's class has two boys, but this is the first year she's had a boy in her class. boys are more than welcome, but most don't seem very enthusiastic about it.

hope the gymnastics places are nice.

I started taking lessons at Dancenter back when it was called Dancespace and I was 3 years old! I really love Mary, who teaches ballet--she was like a part of the family for the 12 years I danced there. Dancenter is (or at least it was then) much more relaxed than some other places I took lessons, such as the Ballet School. I know some parents thought it wasn't competitive enough, but I just wanted to have fun, so it was great for me!
