So, I am newly pregnant with number 1 (I estimate about 3 weeks along) and have an appointment and tour scheduled for January 14th at Special Beginnings. The appointment is with David, the male midwife. My partner and I have no problem with this...just want to know if there is anything we should be aware of before we go.
Thanks!

Someone very dear to me birthed with David (though she ended up doing so at AAMC because the babe came early), and I know she was very, very pleased with him and with her experience.

David just helped me birth my son in mid-October. He is great- he's a little less chatty than some other midwives, but still warm and caring and very, very knowledgeable. He's been at SB forever (since it opened) and really knows what he is doing. He's kind of no-nonsense, but very supportive of you making your own decisions, etc. He is a VERY strong believer in the "pregnancy is not a disease" philosophy- all around a great midwife to have on your side (and at your side!)

I think everyone I know who birthed at SB really likes David! I've never heard anything negative. I saw him for many appts and always felt comfortable with him.

David has a calm, peaceful, comforting way about him. I trust him completely. He's not quick to recommend "medical" type things so you know if David says you need to go to the hospital or have some non-midwife type procedure, you probably need it. He will respect your wishes and not pressure you to have tests, etc.
All that being said, the other midwives at SB are amazing also. I have always been completely at ease with any of them and never felt like one was better than another. I would trust any of them with my baby's life.
I didn't end up birthing @ SB but had several appts with David before my situation changed and I couldn't go to SB anymore. David was awesome! He was so great when I told him that my first pregnancy had been so smooth and that my second had been anything but...he really was great at calling to validate my feelings and stuff!!

Another mom who has had good experiences with David here. He was there when my daughter was born and was absolutely wonderful. I think you will be happy with all of the midwives at Special Beginnings.

you should be aware that David is AWESOME!!!!! He is so fantastic! He is gentle, hands off unless he needs to help with something, very into you doing it yourself and being empowered. He is very good at what he does. I had him for both of my births, and he was perfect. Just watching and waiting while I labored away. Then right there to help when things weren't going so well. He was a midwife in the armed forces and is very knowledgeable. You'd be very lucky to have him on call when you go into labor IMO

I like him a lot and all the births I have done with him have done well, but he is a BIT different if you end up transported to the hospital. His easygoing birth center vibe changes in my opinion. He doesn't turn into a medwife or anything, but a lot of the things I come to expect from him don't necessarily go the same way at AAMC.

David is an amazing midwife. He is one of the best this area has to offer. He trusts the woman's body and the natural process of birth. He has a calming effect on couples and has a lot of information to help you make your decisions in childbirth. He's simply divine! You'll love him! Promise!

Enjoy the tour!!

Best of luck!

David attended my dd's birth at AAMC (due to premature rupture of membranes at 33wks). I wish I could say that I *loved* him, but I can't. I would have appreciated it if he had been more encouraging and interactive with us, but he was very hands off and not terribly "helpful" in terms of suggesting comfort measures, positions for labor, etc. In hindsight I would have liked to have a doula, but didn't think I'd need one with a midwife (esp since we were planning a birth center birth).
