The Toledo Art Museum is free and offer kids activities on certain days. The Toledo Zoo is awesome, definitely worth purchasing a season pass. Along Route 2 near Port Clinton, there's a drive-through safari and a deer petting zoo.

Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is one of the 10 best zoos in the USA, you can feed the giraffes there...Fort Wayne also has a science museum.

In Ann Arbor, our favorite place is the UM's Matthaei Botanical Garden, which is free to the public every Friday afternoon. Outside Ann Arbor, there's the SASHA Wildlife Sanctuary in Manchester, MI.

The Huron-Clinton Metroparks in SE Mich are awesome ($20 for an annual pass). Right off I-275 one metropark offers the Turtle Cove outdoor waterpark.

Oh, another favorite of ours off I-275 is Calder Dairy Farm in Carleton, MI. We went there last year with my mother's group and my older son got to take a turn milking a cow as part of the farm tour. He's been begging me to go back. You can schedule a group tour for about $7 per kid, including a wagon ride, milking a cow & ice cream at the end of the tour.

Hmmm...we have lots of other favorite field trips, but now I'm drawing a blank!

Greenfield Village (part of The Henry Ford in Dearborn, MI) is pretty cool, and I think that 4.5 year old would like some of it. In the fall the Firestone farm has harvest things going on that the older child would find fun, they have a wonderful carosel, and on the village green there are typically fun kid things to do...you can get an update from them that gives you the different activities throughout the year. They have sliegh rides in the winter, too...

The Detroit Zoo is neat, my kids and I go sometimes weekly during the summer. THey have a wonderful polar exibit, where you can go down under the bears and seals and watch them swim, the prarie dog exhibit is the same way...you can go into their hill and watch them run around, etc. They have a BEAUTIFUL butterfly and humming bird exhibit. The hummers are shy, but the butterflies are everywhere and the kids just love it. Hmmmmm...the amphibian exhibit is cool, too, my kids and my neice really love it. The reptile house needs to be redone, but they have a great variety of reptiles, so the kids are happy.

Definately the Toledo Zoo. I love it there. The Akron Zoo is nice, too, and much smaller. It's good for younger ones, like yours.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is nice. So is the Cleveland Children's Museum, Great Lakes Science Center, and the Hershey Children's Garden.

In Castalia (near Sandusky) is Back to the Wild, a wildlife rehabilitation and nature Education Center. www.backtothewild.com It is all native ohio Wildlie that has been injered or orphaned. If able, the animal is rehabilitated and returned to the wild, if it has a permanent injury it stays at the center as an educational animal. Mona (director o the center and my mom
) won Animal Planet's Hero of the year award in 2007. They are open for tours most days, but they do appreciate a call irst to make sure they have staff on hand for the tour.
